It could be said that all those men and women who complain they have been disappointed by people they have loved, only have themselves to blame

"Those who possess the true science of love are continuously inspired, dilated, and live in poetry and beauty, because they have learnt to love all human creatures. But they love them from afar. They know that if they get too close, they will be disappointed, and since they do not want to be disappointed, they keep their distance. So then, whether or not these people show goodness, generosity and faithfulness, those who truly love are always filled with wonder.
It could be said that all those men and women who complain they have been disappointed by people they have loved, only have themselves to blame. They wanted to get too close and of course what they got to see was not great; they found caves covered in mould and cobwebs, wasteland overgrown with brambles and thorn bushes, and swamps. Disappointment was inevitable. So, if you want your love for these men and these women to continue, and if you want them to continue to be a source of wonder to you, then keep some distance between yourself and them."
