They believe that human consciousness is a function of the brain which is composed solely of matter and energy. They also must believe in vertical evolution as the origin of life, since they don't believe in a Creator. The problem is, that consciousness or perception (same thing, really) can't be explained by a material process in the brain. For example, let's say you touch a hot stove with your finger. We know that the perception of pain does not occur in the finger. The nerve impulses must travel along thousands of nerve cells from the finger to the brain. None of those cells feels any pain while sending the signal. Somewhere in the brain, the perception of pain must occur. But the brain is just a vast network of specialized nerve cells that send and receive signals to each other through synapses. No single nerve cell feels pain. We know this because the ones in the finger and arm don't feel anything when sending the "pain" signal to the brain. We also know that probing the brain of a living person does not cause any pain. The brain cells themselves do not feel pain while being probed electrically or even when damaged.

Since individual nerve and brain cells do not perceive pain (or other perceptions like sound, smell or vision), how can perception explained as happening in the brain? There is nothing in the brain to actually perceive anything. The only explanation is that perception (or consciousness) is a non-material process. There must be a soul or spirit to convert the brain cell activity into all the perceptions that we're familiar with.

Sorry materialists, you can't explain consciousness with brain cell activity, therefore humans must be spirits housed in material bodies. Since spirits are supernatural (outside of nature), there must exist a God that created them.
