Interesting article. If we're smart we'll pay attention to how all this goes down in Iceland. They are the microcosm.

Re: Iceland...food shortages threaten in formerly very prosperous nation...take note
The US isn't dependent on imports to feed its citizens, in fact I'm sure that we're a net exporter several times over for most foods (but oh how I'll miss my kiwifruit). However, breakdown in distribution systems, until the government steps in and (hopefully) gets things moving again, could be scary for a while. Also we might have to make some decisions that politicians may not have the vision or courage to do, like "we're going to stop feeding all this grain to cows for a while, and we're all going to eat basic staples and very little meats, since meat is an inefficient use of plant protein, and we want to be sure we have enough to feed everyone." Anyway, just saying.

I have been saying this will be the biggest crisis and have made plans to get out of the desert this week. When the food stops coming.. the people in the desert will be forced to loot and pillage just to survive.

thanks for the article link!

It is not frightening, but rather expected and planned.

It is but the beginning of a long road.

We will not be denied.

Yeah, could be a partial issue in other places but a big difference is that Iceland can't grow much food.

Many islands or extreme climate locations may have a similar imporation problem if the larger producing nations go down and stop shipping to them to feed domestic populations.

This is very interesting. Looks like little Iceland is our precursor. We certainly should take note.

The scenarios are endless!

What will my fellow brother and sister humans choose to do?

How will they react and how long before new systems are developed, replacing the old?

I have a nagging suspicion the plans in place will not go smoothly for them.

We are protected and we are evolving.

It'll be different in the US. Have you noticed the little "discount" grocery stores popping up? Some of these are warehouse-type groceries like Aldo's that moved into an old Winn-Dixie store building in our county.

Note to that the Dollar Stores are now stocking regular grocery non-perishables and a dairy case with milk, eggs, cheese, bacon and hot dogs.

We'll be handed a debit/credit card to buy our groceries. We've already been acclimated to the fact that the stores store info on what we buy with our key-chain identity cards.

There will be food, but likely not the usual selection and you have to signup to get the card. tptb not only will know where you are, but where you shop and what you buy.

George Orwell kind of thing.

I am about to move. The house I wanted in Glendale, AZ fell through. My second choice is in the northern part of Peoria. I went with it. I noticed in google that my new home is VERY close to a lightly used road out of the Phoenix area.

If you don't have several months of food and supplies tucked away RIGHT NOW, you are going to suffer. There's still plenty on the shelves at your grocer, and there's food in the field...so you have no excuses.

People don't understand that "Just In Time" (JIT) deliveries mean that there aren't any "extras" stocked at the back of your fav cheap supermarket. The stores no longer keep stock in back because it's expensive to maintain, so they put in JIT orders.

But these days, JIT takes longer because trucks wait for FULL loads (in order to save on their expenses).

And most importantly -- JIT requires trucks, and trucks require fuel, but trucks don't always pay for fuel with cash...they more often pay for it with CREDIT.

Credit is drying up. In the weeks and months to come, it's going to get worse. So when your grocer runs out of your favorite national brand of milk, you are screwed. When your eggs can't get thru, you are screwed. When trucks can't get flour to the baker, and the baker can't truck the bread to your store, you are screwed.

If you aren't prepping now, you are screwed.
"Until you are willing to organize your friends and neighbors and literally shut down cities - drive at 5mph through the streets of major cities on the freeway and stop commerce, refuse to show up for work, refuse to borrow and spend more than you make, show up in Washington DC with a million of your neighbors and literally shut down The Capitol you WILL be bent over the table on a daily basis." SO TRUE. beans, rice, spam, cporned beef, meal, flour can be frozen to guarantee that larva do not hatch into weevils after 2 weeks in the freezer punch many holes in the plastic bag with a pin and leave in a warm room on a towel In 2006 I still had Y@K just in case food left. Cheap insurance and cheaper than all the freze dried foods. i stored it in buckets from Winn Dixie's bake shop having omly held frosting and icing which were easily cleaned out with HOT water and a lil Clorox and with the snap on lids. I made spaghetti in June 2006 with past I had marked as put in the freezer and "tenmpuratre equalized" in october of 1999. i did not have too much but a few buckets. 25# of sugar will fit in a 5 gal bucket and even idf openedthe woprst it will do is clump a little. many store won't give you buckets anymore but on Fri sat the WD would crush about 20-25 every week if i didn't get there in time. istill got about 12-15 and am working to fill themn up Be crative and buy stuf that you can make "one pot meals" with. The hints are theie in the news reprots ?worries of global food shortages" and many more subtle. the snerring assholes who make fun of you will loom funny diging for roots in the wood. Bon apetit!
