Will one of you kindly give us a simple break-down? "Until you are willing to organize your friends and neighbors and literally shut down cities - drive at 5mph through the streets of major cities on the freeway and stop commerce, refuse to show up for work, refuse to borrow and spend more than you make, show up in Washington DC with a million of your neighbors and literally shut down The Capitol you WILL be bent over the table on a daily basis." Isaac Brock died for us (OP) User ID: 440033 Canada 10/15/2008 02:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Who's leading? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 490435Whew! It's over and that was a squeaker. The NDP incumbent beat out the Conservative. The real threat was supposed to have come from the Liberal guy and he was such a distant third, it was laughable. Man, that was close. Cool. It looked close in the Western Arctic where my daughter lives... but then the native votes came in from the remote communities and the NDP incumbent took it. Funny, the Conservative who gave him a run for his money ran a popular Coffee shop just like the turfed Rahim Jaffer in Ed/Strathcona. owner of an extensive collection of curios from the exotic orient |

Quoting: Isaac Brock died for usHasn't that guy represented that riding for like a decade? I heard on TV that the woman that beat him is an environmental lawyer. Now THAT is something. One of the commentators said that Jaffer had already given his victory speech before all the results were in. And then when his opponent started catching up, he went into a back room. And then left with his entourage. This is pretty wild stuff. |
Isaac Brock died for us (OP) User ID: 440033 Canada 10/15/2008 02:37 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't understand how Canadian parliament works, so I don't "get" the implications here. Will one of you kindly give us a simple break-down? Quoting: Redheaded StepchildImagine that there was only Congress. The cabinet is composed entirely of Congressmen/women. Whoever has a majority in congress choses the cabinet. Now imagine that there are more than two parties to chose from, and if one party completely pisses off the voters it will be scraped into the dustbin of history and new parties will spring up to replace it. So frequently, there is no majority. In that case, the party with the most seats in Parliament can only govern with the approval (or confidence) of one or two smaller parties. When the small parties stop backing the party in power, they have to hold a new election. So now we have another minority government. The Prime Minister, Harper is a Conservative who pretends to be very pro-American, but at heart, I think he is a true patriot Canadian. Now when Bush asks him to speed up the NAU, adopt the Amero or send more troops, Harper can honestly say... "My coalition partners won't let me do that." When we vote for our Member of Parliament (Congressman), here we don't always vote for our first choice if our first choice can't beat our least desired choice. We vote "strategically" to deny that least desired choice from happening. I liked my Member of Parliament, but I didn't want his party the Conservatives to get a majority, so I voted for the NDP (social democrat). She had the best chance, besides the Liberals are corrupt to the core. owner of an extensive collection of curios from the exotic orient |

Rahim was only 24 when he first got elected. He's 35 now. he just got engaged to another Conservative MP from Ontario. Now that he won't be working with her anymore, I wonder if she will dump him. [link to en.wikipedia.org] Redheaded Stepchild, Howday but the Queen doesn't chose the Governor General, the Prime Minister sends her his choice and she rubber stamps it. Trust the Liberals to chose an anti-Canadian Haitian immigrant with ties to the failed FLQ terrorist movement for governor-general. When a minority government falls, the Governor General has the power to call an election or see if another party can form the government. Of course Michaelle Jean has no concept of how our system works, which is why the Liberals chose her back in 2005. owner of an extensive collection of curios from the exotic orient |

I could be wrong. When one party gains a majority the only real check on the Prime Minister's power are his own caucus members. Aside from that there is the Supreme Court and the Senate (not an elected body like in the USA). The Senators are appointed political hacks (maybe Rahim will get a Senate seat) who hold their seat till retirement. When one Senator reaches retirement age, the Prime Minister can chose a replacement. Thus they are supposed to provide some continuity, unswayed by popular emotion. They can only delay laws but not stop them. owner of an extensive collection of curios from the exotic orient |
