Lots of interesting earthquake activity happening now in California, and isn't the New Moon coming up?

I agree. I think that subduction zone is getting ready to rip next time they have ETS episode.

I'll take Cali over PNW any day.

Now the Juan de Fuca, thats a different story. I think we will see that puppy slip in our lifetimes, and it won't be pretty.

Maybe Cassandra was saying an earthquake, not in the literal sense, but as an analogy to something that is about to happen. Possibly Cassandra's RV wavelengths got scrambled a bit.

No. He was very specific. An earthquake and a tsunami the likes never seen before in any record. Plus, he said something about some "city" or "name" being mentioned in many papers prominently prior to the event, and I don't remember anything of the sort happening. When I questioned him about it, he hand-waved and said it never mattered, when HE made a huge deal about it before on a few threads.

Agreed, possible, but if I remember the timing on that one correct, it's still about 30+ years in the future, on average. The largest we have record for was a Mw8.9 to 9.

Before 2012?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 374615

Maybe. The last one was 1700 and before that 1200's and 900's. The scientist say could be any day or could be hundreds of yrs. from now.

Thing is that every 14 months there are non-volcanic, slow earthquakes up there. They are deep and no one even feels them but it lasts for weeks. They first thought (or hoped) that these periodic events were relieving stress on the plates. Then they realized that each one is like cocking the trigger on a gun one click at a time.

I don't think they know yet what causes these periodic events. But my guess is that it has something to do with pole tides or something like that adding the extra stress.

The next episode of ETS is due around June 2009.

They say it is not a matter of if, just when the Juan de Fuca will blow. It will be like another 2004 Sumatra or worse.

That's funny 'cause if she goes east into the hills from Modesto she would be in the Yosemite area. The Yosemite area towns are very close to Mammoth & Devil's Post Pile (and Long Valley) as the crow flies over the Sierra Nevada Mtns. She'd be better off staying in Modesto.

Hillcrest, please don't freak. They've been going on for a VERY long time, likely long before anyone envisioned the possibility. They also happen at other points in the globe, but usually more regularly (like Japan every 6-12 months) and Hawaii. I have my own theories about them, but they do have official ideas about what's happening.

Sorry, do you live up there? If so just keep track of it and when the scientists and your gut start to get nervous get the hell out. You might also want to take a 2-week vacation away from the coasts at the time of the ETS episodes every 14 months.

With luck it will be later than sooner. There's lots of information on it on the web and check out some of the scientific papers on it. There are many earthquake scientists up there doing intense research on it.

Please don't freak, just get informed and do the research so you know what you are dealing with. Check with your county also since they all have come up with emergency plans such as routes out, etc.

The way I look at it is in this day and age of extreme earth changes that there is hardly any place that is not in danger of some kind.
