Doom in Ethiopia - Volcanic Eruption covers 300 square kilometers!

WHAT? 300 sq km in just a few days?! This seems major...

Yes, it´s a rift zone in process of spreading... you know, isn´t it? Could it be truth? Could it be a speeding up?

But how could they predict/forecast on the timings? How could it be so proach in time? For us witnessing such an event just as we are starting to grow as a technological civilization seems so a small probability even considering that the current (warmer) Inter Glacial is quite overdue, as much as 500 years or more...

Can it be?

Maybe the ones that may had the instruments to know, and thus make predictions... really had passed on the information... can the Mayans had had a relictual knowledged passed on to them by... too ?

It´s so small such a probability (regarding the potential proachness of the processes), but i´m starting to get suspicious about... the closing of geo timeframes.

There are so many coincidences... still we may have much more time... but who really knows? Most (human) geologists are trapped in the traditional plate tectonics theory and could not even guess on the overall size of the processes! It´s almost ridiculous... just as many other issues...

Erta Ale is an isolated basaltic shield volcano that is the most active volcano in Ethiopia. The broad, 50-km-wide volcano rises more than 600 m from below sea level in the barren Danakil depression. Erta Ale is the namesake and most prominent feature of the Erta Ale Range. The 613-m-high volcano contains a 0.7 x 1.6 km, elliptical summit crater housing steep-sided pit craters. Another larger 1.8 x 3.1 km wide depression elongated parallel to the trend of the Erta Ale range is located to the SE of the summit and is bounded by curvilinear fault scarps on the SE side. Fresh-looking basaltic lava flows from these fissures have poured into the caldera and locally overflowed its rim. The summit caldera is renowned for one, or sometimes two long-term lava lakes that have been active since at least 1967, or possibly since 1906. Recent fissure eruptions have occurred on the northern flank of Erta Ale.

Has there been any change in the volcano in Washington State?
The reason I asked was because, the other day I had my eyes closed, kept seeing this dark curly haired man about about late 20s to 30s he was craving an Indian figurine, very detailed with a feather head dress. I also saw in the distance
a mountain which was a volcano, it started shooting smoke in the air. I only felt that people started running.
The reason I said Washington State, was because I described it
to my sister and she said it sounded like it, my sister used to live there.

I'm not aware of any recent activity at Mt. St. Helens or any of the other Cascade volcanos. Geogal would know, search for her Volcano thread. Or just Google Cascade Volcano Observatory, they're out there somewhere.

So it happened, BUT it seems that it was never 300 square km, rather it was something above 100 square kilometers... which is still quite impressive but perhaps not undocumented for there very active volcanoes

This is just a volcanic event in an isolated area... but if you understand more you might see that there are connections... eruptions bring destruction to inmediate areas but also bring a lot of life in the long run, volcanic soils are often among the richest ones on Earth and their beauty is quite aknowledged... not for nothing people choose to live close to these giants.

I may had exagerated in the first post...

Pfft! that's got nothing on that Yellowstone caldera pyroclastic surge that happened a few hundred years ago back in November in 2008. Man that sucker destroyed half of the continent! and they STILL don't know that exact death toll it was so huge! They reckon something like 150-200 million people just simply dissapeared from existence.

The experts are standing by the 300 sq km estimate, which converts to 36x3=108 miles2. I can't tell from the MODIS images if that's accurate. We'll get better numbers eventually.

This was the 2005 eruption, nothing going on there now it seems.

This is a really interesting area geologically. Just some cursoury research shows that the Afar Depression is a rift valley formed by the divergence of three plates. This is one of the few areas that are land observable oceanic rifts. It looks like it is essentially creating new seabed on land.

Hell is surfacing from the center of the earth.

Note the fresh SO2 emitted from the volcano today. Maybe that will continue, maybe not.

That's my understanding too. Some day those volcanos will be islands in an inland sea.

Why does this always happen to the poorest?

As for MODIS information and many still unconfirmed reports there was indeed a major eruption on the 3 rd and 4 th of november, 2008.... not 2005 eruption but a new one.

I feel we can trust in MODIS system! it´s hard proof by modern technology, so there was an eruption.

For the extension, we would see... MODIS information makes for about 100 square kilometers, barely more.

For your position toward people on foot, please try to be more human/compassionate! Nevertheless that´s an isolated, desertic area scarcely populated if at all... your comments were not kind toward people and...

We don´t need "dooms"... we do need knowledge and wisdom.

There was a volcanic eruption just over a year ago off Yemen

African Rift.

Or they will be volcanoes within the new continental margins, just as in other areas of the world...

that are thought to be "subduction" zones, which is ridiculous...

both things are possible

For now this "rift valley" is in the process of transforming into an oceanic rift, an ocean floor spreading area... but it rather is much more... continental expansion still. Volcanoes are weak points in the crust and they seem to have a strong trend toward keeping in existence for very long geologic timeframes, incredibly long, perhaps... they just grow over and over themselves... and have changes.

I'm not sure I trust MODIS too much, especially when estimating the size of the flow. Today they show hotspots all over California and the Pacific NW, but no one is reporting any eruptions. John Seach [link to www.volcanolive.com]

I have lots of compassion for anyone affected by this eruption (hopefully no one) perhaps too much. I maintain my sanity by exercising a cynical and sometimes inapproriate sense of humor. Sorry if you were offended, but ultimately self-preservation trumps compassion every time.

Well... i´m going from this interesting issue for now, but of course its quite amazing and may be wider... perhaps

MODIS shows fires too, so it´s possible that these hot spots are wild fires... i saw them too... and it was somewhat strange to have some of them so... north...

isn´t it cold enough already?... perhaps it´s dry... i´m quite disconnected of the current "meteorology" now...

I think a remote system like MODIS, presented by a known university such as Hawaii´s is far more reliable than a link to a newspaper or an amateur report. Of course... it probably has limitations too.

Do you have links to the ash plumes images still viewable?

I think that glp could be for learning and sharing too... not just scaring, je je je BTW i´m not the one being seriously offended... but it´s obvious that your words had had such effect in some people... i don´t prefer cinism, nevertheless everyone is self... so just think that you are offending some people for sure... choose it?
