What do you think Merlin would have to know in order to become a wizard?
Just curious as to what your answer might be.

I have a few ideas on the subject.

Man's symbiotic connection with the cosmos will be known and there is nothing which can stop that knowing. Because everything we all do everyday helps confirm that truth. It is just that we haven't reached the pinnacle of where it leads. But we will soon enough. We will either live or die with that knowledge. Between Heaven and Earth is us.

Be brave young warriors in truth.

Naw i never thought Merlin was an alchemist. Not his style. Never really struck me as one. But on the Shamanism. Yea i can see that. As far as i understand Shamanism. I mean him knowing it all.

I think Merlin was somewhat like Dr. Doolittle. Very good at talking to animals and that sort of thing. And watched the sky a lot. Read stars in his own way. And also prayed a lot. and loved nature a lot. REspected life a lot. And wrote a lot of spells aka poetry.

Re: What do you think Merlin would have to know in order to become a wizard?
Merlin could probably cast any 9th level Wizard spell without any hassle. I reckon he was a dab hand at Shapechange, Summon Monster and Meteor Storm...

Seriously, though, Merlin (or Myrddin or Ambrosius) probably had an extensive knowledge of ancient British and Druidic lore. He would've had some exposure to Classical Greek and Roman learning too.

I see him as a learned sage who kept the knowledge of the Ancient World alive during the Dark Age. Maybe he's more of an archetype or symbol than a real person? Either way, Merlin is a powerful figure.

there were supposedly many merlins they were pagan prophets shamans if im not mistaken. The figure merlin is fictionalized from a this history
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Jacobs ladder

the bottom rung is in the wakened world

Dreamland is in another rung

that tunnel that people go thru when they die goes thru dreamland
but the light where they embrace loved ones is the "Light" - another rung - that is three rungs so far

if you have ever seen the Eastern Krishna art of the happy land of blue people playing music amongst happy animals - it aint like that but that is the fourth rung

there are seven rungs

if you can train yourself to sit up and remain conscious to not fall asleep but go with this wakened mind into the twilight dreamlands
and survive
and adventure
and become grown there
just as here you learned to walk and talk
and then bring that conscious memory of what you learn back to this realm and ponder long and absorb
you become more than what you were

you keep training
those that learn
to survive in the light which is no easy mission
because what you do affects the you here
gain big abilities

those who can climb the rungs all the way to the sixth
do not live life as you do
they can go to different times or places - just as easy as you can stretch forth your hand and pick an applle
but looking at them you wouldnt see anything different that anyone else
except they are happy
and you enjoy being in their presence

they are magicians
they can easy go back somewhere and be a Merlin

A learned sage. I like that :)

but i dont think he is an archetype or symbol i think there were a few Merlins around from time to time. They fade into the background of life and basically shut up as the young Merlins start yaking and yaking lol Merlins cant be taught really. One has to be born to the path.

One word - Prestidigitation.

I'm reading a great trilogy Called The Warlord Chronicles
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

The books try to set the Arthur legend in a "what if it
really happened" setting, but much more realistically.
Pagan priests were able to do many tricks to convince
their followers of their powers. Even the Christians
at that time resorted to forms of trickery.

The books are awesome and really paint a picture of Britain
in the 500s, after the Romans had left. I highly recommend
them.
 Quoting: DrPostman

I was reading something about that a few months ago. like the first vending machine was a wine dispesner from a temple you put a coin in and the weight triggered a lever and stopper. Things like that early religions were charlatanism at its finest. Thunder machines statues that drank water to show the gods have answered your prayers. Really interesting stuff postman.

Ill check you links out

Then they go live on the moon or Jupiter or something lol ...i havent reached that level yet ...woops did i say that ? LOL just kiddin ; )

But there is an old lore that dragons live on the moon. I know i heard it somewhere.

Funny how now he is feared hated and an example of pure evil when his greatest accomplishment was defense of his people.

The Warlord Chronicles has incidents where both Arthur is
made to drink a potion and gets a vision, while at the
same time receiving Excalibur (on a stone, not in one). Our
main character, Dervil, is also made to drink a potion
of Merlin's concoction (involving the the chemical having
passed through Merlin's urinary tract) where he has a
dream of accompanying Merlin to the north to find The
Cauldron. It's fascinating how the author keeps you wondering
if Merlin really can perform magic or is just lucky sometimes
with what he does.
 Quoting: DrPostman

See i have a feeling Merlin didnt do tricks. I think he just understood how nature works. He was like a scientist that didnt exclude the human mind connection to our local surroundings. It is all a matter of belief though. The more you believe it the better it works and maybe Merlin had no doubt. That is why there are always so few Merlins because most fall back or are already in doubt.

I also believe that Merlin believed in God. Sort of the Grand High Wizard. lol After all God speaking the universe into existence would be very much what he believed could happen...about speaking things into existence with thoughts and words. Such as incantations. That is what we call them.

Re: What do you think Merlin would have to know in order to become a wizard?
other interesting stuff is the stories of Vlad the Impaler (dracula) he was actually a defender of Romania against the Muslim Armies. He would impale the bodies of slain turks on poles as psychological warfare 100's at a time.

Funny how now he is feared hated and an example of pure evil when his greatest accomplishment was defense of his people.

But he also tortured and killed his own people to from what i heard.

Yes but not like as bad as most history books would suggest. he was a tough ruler but human life was not as cherished then. war disease famine hopefully you could live to the ripe old age of 33
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Excellent Focal Point. I love that movie. I love Excalibur. One of my favorite movies. Merlin was so spot on in that movie. lol I like that part in the movie where he describes the dragon as the Earth itself.

Wild man in the woods. living the simple life and communing with nature and seeing visions and so forth through his knowledge of nature. Excellent.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Last comment then i have to go.

When i think of Merlin i think of all the other ways human beings could have went on to make progress and evolve. Makes me wonder if we chose the right path. I say we have overlooked a whole other area of progress that is taken for fantasy and nonsense now days but it really isnt.

Merlin took the soul path. No doubt about it.

Good nite everyone : )
