Action News 5 Investigates: Profanity Police

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - From her perch on a downtown planter, Martha Murphy Rhodes recently opened up during an interview with Action News 5.

Rhodes, who has lived on the streets for nearly 10 years, said she's seen and heard a lot - including a lot of bad language.

"Everything," she said, "and I'm not a cusser, so I don't speak such words."

Those who do may find themselves off the streets and behind bars.

Willie Norfleet - recently sited for aggressive panhandling, public intoxication, an open container violation, and fighting - is the poster child for the new crack-down on bad behavior in downtown Memphis. The Center City Commission's new bike patrol even arrested him for cursing.

Public safety coordinator Larry Bloom makes no apologies for policing profanity.

America: Land of the oppressed, home of the fascists.

You might think it unrealistic, but I suspect that 50 years from now "verbal insurrection" will be a criminal offense. In fact most everything will be illegal - the populace will be so controlled that the average person will have broken 8 separate laws before they drink their first cup of coffee in the morning.

Yeah I've seen that but I disagree. In that movie everything appears aesthetically pleasing, the people seem genuinely pleased and the society seems to be based on the elitist vision of utopia.

I feel the more probable outcome is one where some areas are significantly aesthetically pleasing while 95% of the country significantly displeasing aesthetically, the populace is significantly more angry and hostile, and that undeniable fascism can be observed everywhere at any time - however is accepted and supported by the citizenry.

People today would look upon that future as the perpetration of utter madness, completely unreasonable and backward, much as the Founding Fathers would feel about modern times.

It used to be UNHEARD of - to curse in public around children.

Absolutely vulgar.

I can remember a day, when a guy cussed in front of me as a small child, and my father approached him and said very quietly, "Please don't use that type of language in front of my daughter." And the guy looked ashamed and apologized...today you'd be cussed out or worse if you said that to someone.

Our moral fiber has eroded to an unbelievable degree.

I don't like laws restricting what people can say - but why is this language necessary. As a matter of personal choice, why would anyone want to be overtly vulgar?

And it's people with views such as yourself which are enablers of fascism. They're only words, and yet your type insists on throwing a hissy when they're spoken. If I injure myself and exclaim "damn it" is it any different from exclaiming "fuck?" No, it carries the same meaning - but from your perspective there is a significant difference, where one is understandable and the other is "bad."

Just because you want to pretend that one word or phrase can be acceptable and the other bad while both hold the same meaning, doesn't give you an excuse to force your childish views on others. I don't wish to be unkind but if you're not mature enough to recognize that a word is just a word, and that if you're not grown-up enough to deal with being exposed to certain words - then you need to just remove yourself from those who've outgrown the trivialities which consume you.

Yes, I think it's reprehensible to throw around the F-Word in front of 5 year olds. I don't think there should be a law against it.

I find it sad that a law would even be required to prevent such a thing.

And I don't excuse "damn it", necessarily either. Believe it or not, you CAN make it through life being ashamed of vulgarity.

I'm not for fascism, and there's nothing in my either of my posts that suggests I'm for government influence over free speech. I am not. I'm for people being decent as a matter of personal choice, and not animals spewing vulgarities around because they are too ignorant to come up with something intelligent to say.

I don't think vulgar people should be removed from society, unlike you, who believe that people who are disgusted by vulgarity should remove themselves. I think we SHOULD coexist. At least it helps me teach my children what a lapse in general morality brings about. It's easy to see if you look around.

its a high time neocons stop fighting hip-hop since its one of those things that cannot be stopped.

in ebonic language, the meaning of words are in its context.

While all our other liberties are slowly being clamped down upon as we turn into a police state, the sheep are being fooled into thinking they are "free" as long as they are allowed to drink and fuck, and talk about drinking and fucking in public and on television.. our society is being dumbed down in the process so that pretty soon the only freedoms that will be left will be drinking and fucking, oh and of course football... and of course you must be a good little debt slave and keep working.. so we will pass laws making it mandatory for you to have your own private health insurance.

In short, the sheep are being turned even more sheepish, slowly over time. They are being taught to worship themselves, and focus on pleasure over everything else.. to focus on their own little individual lives and let the government worry about the big picture.

Enjoy your freedom, sheep!

I didn't say you were "for" fascism, but that you're an enabler of it. You're views are childish and intolerant, and if you had your way people would submit to your views and refrain from not using words that you don't like. Further, you feel those who use words which you disagree with to be lesser than you - not quite as moral/ethical as you. Because you condemn the use of words and look down on those who use these words which your church once saw fit to declare "evil," you demonstrate a perceived superiority over others and as such feel completely secure in your intolerant expectation that said words and individuals using them are "bad."

I should feel "ashamed" that I used that word? Just a word, nothing more - but you look down on me for it. Much as during the Crusades your people looked down on all those "anti-Christs" who they slaughtered and imprisoned. Your people were quite certain that they were right then too, just as they're equally certain they're right as they begin arresting people...for using words they don't like.

Nope - your twisting my words to fit your paradigms, and that's fine - you're entitled.

I will stand next to you and fight for your right to spew whatever disgusting venom you like.

How's that?

But yea - those words can go without saying, in my PERSONAL view - to which I'm also entitled.

I don't find myself superior to any other human being - because all life is precious - and I'm not without sin of my own. But yea, I can perceive that a behavior is vile...I am sure that there are behaviors that YOU percieve as vile. We just draw our lines in different places.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 426194

Didn't twist your words, everything I stated was accurate. And no the difference is that I admit that a word is only a word, where-as you insist that some words are "vile." One of us is being reasonable, and the other childish.

As far as you claiming that you don't look down on people doing what you perceive to be "vile" things....c'mon now. They're being "vile" aren't they? You figure certain words are bad, thus saying those words is bad, thus you not saying them as good, thus you're morally superior.

But obviously you're not going to admit that, nor do you even believe it to be true. The reason your reasoning is so flawed in this instance is because logic was never used to arrive at the conclusion that certain words are bad. You just accepted it. That means logic can't be used to defeat your beliefs, because you didn't need your position to be logical in order to accept it. Logic can't defeat what was never expected to be logical in the first place.

Profanity laws are old. Most states, cities and communities have or had laws regarding profanity, but in the last 30 years they haven't enforced them or had them sticken all together.

This push to enforce the law in Memphis is just the conversatives in the community making their presence known.
