Guys with beards: How long does the itchy phase last?

hi, I'm a first time beard grower... I tried 'dead sea water - mineral body lotion' by Ahava - it worked really well, I'm down to just a dull irritation, although I'm told you can only get it from hair spas.
Beards are great, but they can make you look like a weirdo..

It should be gone within 2 weeks, after that it will itch from time to time because your just not used to it. When growing your beard do not trim or cut any of it until after a month. You go through a weird stage but trimming or cutting it seems to stunt it's growth.

Im 23 and still struggle to grow one! I love living longer but I never get itches and have an uncut beard.

Usually about a week, to a week and a half. I've found that if I brush it in the morning, I wont the itchy feeling the rest of the day.

Itchy? Never...maybe you're doing it wrong...even when the nurse shaved me for my vasectomy it never itched...

Splash a little rubbing alcohol on it. That will help.

Shampoo and condition it almost everyday or it will make your skin itch!

I look 12 without at least a mustache.

I grow a beard mainly because I can't be bothered to shave. It starts itching at about a week and then stops at about 2 weeks.

However I always shave it off completely around that point as at that length it becomes obvious that it's ginger. :-(

Man up and just ignore the itch. It will go away. I grow a beard every winter and the only downside is when I motorboat my wife, I don't get a good boob to face contact.

Beard Balm of some sort to ease the itch during the initial phase of growth. Beard shampoo/conditioner and a good beard oil will help with brittle and overly sheddy beards once you reach "full beard".

Also, be aware that (at least for me) there are two "itchy" stages. First is the immediate itch of the first couple weeks. Once the hair gets long enough to lie flat against the skin, this should go away. Second, is the point at which the beard hair gets just long enough to start to naturally curl. This is usually the longer "itch period" for me. It will last as long as it takes for the hair to get long enough that the curled ends no longer reach the skin.

Again, decent beard shampoo/conditioner and beard oil can help soften and tame the hairs so that the irritation is either significantly reduced or eliminated. Just make sure that when oiling, you don't overdo it. Also, using a beard brush to apply and spread the oil helps as, if you work the oil all the way down to the skin, it will help exfoliate as well.

Too funny! I can so relate to this question because I've tried to grow a beard about a dozen times. Each time to fail at about the thirty day mark, because of the darned itching driving me absolutely nuts.

And here I sit, at about the thirty day mark once again trying to grow a beard. Will I be able to make it past this horrible itching period? I think I can, I think I can.

I probably can't.

My son is blond and he has an epic beard. He loves growing his facial hair. The school lets him so we just let it grow. He's autistic and shaving is very difficult for him.

Everybody should grow beards: blonds, black dudes, chinamen. Everybody has their own way, their own style.

What... shampoo your beard? What? Longest beard I had I could fold up and cover my face, a drop of shampoo never touched it...

Itching should stop in about a week. I can go a few days or a week before it starts to itch, then about a week of itchyness at most, then its all good.

I just shaved mine off after a 4 month growth. Starting it up all over again. I just don't feel right without it. Not into the whole babyface look. The itchiness, for me at least, comes and goes as the beard grows. Shampoo and conditioner works like magic.

This right here, folks, is a big problem. Some of us have been groomed so well that we allow people to "let us" decide what to do with our own bodies. How generous of the school to let him have facial hair on HIS face.

Been growing mine out for 8 months. Itching lasted about 2-3 weeks after that it was fine. I didn't trim any of it, just let it go. Now I shave my neck so it's only jawline and up. It does still itch when my beard hits my neck but it's worth it because it also tickles the thighs when, well, she'll let you know.

I grow one for the ice fishing season and then whack it off only to grow another in November!

DO NOT!!!! Use regular hair shampoo and conditioner on your beard. Buy some beard specific product online. Also use beard oil.

You will also need to get used to the sensation of feeling it grow.

Sometimes I can feel it growing and pulsing out of my manly face.

Other times the skin under the beard gets dry and itchy. Use lotion NOT head and shoulders. That made my face peel. Good luck.

In the shower use shampoo conditioner on your beard. Brush it whilst still damp until dry. Apply lotion to your beard and massage to the skin.
Helps much.
