5150 - Bill (OP) 12/08/2005 10:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This stinks like a dead fish. This line: ===--- No one is sure, but there is speculation heavy rains contributed to a short circuit in underground power lines. ===--- Utter nonsense, electricity does not explode like this. It can trigger an explosion, like gas fumes, but by itself even at very high voltages, youīll get sparking and popping at best. Transformers are another story, but still the blast was sizable. And the official statement is: We donīt know? "The lunatic is on the grass The lunatic is on the grass Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs Got to keep the loonies on the path..." |

Anonymous Coward 12/08/2005 10:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sorry...this was the 2nd snip from the star article I wanted to post: "Residents standing on the street said they learned of the explosions when the buildingīs alarm went off, but for Cindy Mavrick, who lives on the second floor on the buildingīs north side, the blasts seemed frighteningly close. "I heard a loud boom, and the building shook," she said. "Thereīs construction down here (at the Hilton Hotel), but this I knew was different." When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming from three manholes, said engineer John Hardin. Two manholes emitted medium-brown smoke, and the third, black smoke, he said." |

5150 - Bill (OP) 12/08/2005 10:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I donīt think this is any kind of conspiracy. I think it is one of two things. 1. Very old and poorly maintained underground infrastructure is falling apart. This has now developed into a gas leak(s). Electrical short circuit(s) at the wrong place and time have resulted in explosions. The local govīt officials are doing their best to keep a lid on it to avoid a public panic. 2. Gang punks are running "meth" labs in a rathole environment beneath the city. Iīm betting itīs door #1 "The lunatic is on the grass The lunatic is on the grass Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs Got to keep the loonies on the path..." |

Ice Maiden (OP) 12/08/2005 10:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Went looking for the explosion story in Detroit last week canīt find anything itīs like the story vanished from the papers. I will make some phone calls Mon and see what I can find out. What you describe that happened in Indiana is the same scenerio in Detroit. Will keep looking. Anonymous Coward 12/08/2005 10:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | With the events that happened in Asia with the tusnami and subsequent earthquakes I donīt think you can rule out magma activity as being the cause. That part of Indiana is in the New Madrid Zone and earth fractures could be allowing water seeping down from the surface (most of Indiana is being flooded at this time because of massive storms)to mix with magma welling up from a cracked fissure. Not saying this is so but itīs something that sould be considered. Hereīs a map that shows the New Madrid Zone. [link to www.igsb.uiowa.edu] |

Fast5 (not longed in) (OP) 12/08/2005 10:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Found it: Underground fire blows off manhole lids January 3, 2005 At least a dozen cast-iron covers blew off manholes along Congress in downtown Detroit on Sunday after a fire began beneath the street. Officials with DTE Energy and Michigan Consolidated Gas said the blaze, under the intersection with Cadillac Square and Randolph, started about 4 p.m. Its cause wasnīt known Sunday night. As underground cables burned and melted, the heat intensified, said Lorie Kessler, spokeswoman for DTE and MichCon. Pressure built up beneath the street and forced off the manhole covers. "Between 15 and 20 blew off," Kessler said. No one was hurt. About 100 feet of cable must be replaced beneath the street. One building near the intersection appeared to have lost power, Kessler said, but none seemed to have lost gas service. MichCon workers said they didnīt detect any natural gas leaking in the area. Authorities couldnīt say how far up the covers flew, but workers at the scene said some were discovered feet away from their holes. The covers, some smashed into pieces, were piled beneath a streetlight as MichCon workers inspected the open holes Sunday night. The manholes, which allow workers access to pipes and cables beneath the streetsī surface, allow access to several utility companies, including Detroitīs Public Lighting Department. The utilities worked with Detroit fire officials to put out the blaze. Smoke poured from some of the open manholes, leaving the lingering stench of burning wires. Detroit police officials said they blocked off the area to vehicles, though several motorists drove through the yellow police tape, toward the uncovered manholes. MichCon workers redirected them. Kessler expected work at the site to continue today.
