Fast moving object

Driving home from town this evening with my eldest son we saw a very fast moving object going across the sky over our house. It looked like two lights (both blueish white) one in front of the other with what I could only describe as a blueish 'halo' around them and it was travelling much faster than a plane. It was falling or flying in an arc towards earth and my son joked that we would come over the brow of the hill to see a huge crater in the back fields. There was no sign of it when we did get to home but we were left mystified as to what it was. We have no light pollution out here and it is a very clear night. I have often watched falling stars and it was not one of those as it was much lower, larger and faster.

Any ideas?
