Moving to Denver /Boulder from NYC - thoughts appreciated

That's not a bad spot to start from, there is lots of commerce in that area and it's close to other industrial regions of the metro (Englewood). You will also be quite close to the mountains, Morrison, Kittredge, and Evergreen are all directly west of you just a few miles. You'll be able to see the mountains quite clearly from littleton.

Driving what? My last cabbie job netted me about 20 bucks a nite upstate.

I am working at getting my CDL though. Long-haul trucking out of Colorado is what I am looking at doing for five years or so. build up enough capital to put down on a home.

Stayed there for my sis's wedding couple years back, the actual wedding took place at a small Chaple up on Red Rock.

I'm fortunate to have family there willing to help me settle in.

Denver is a terrible place to live.

Has Denver changed that much? I know when I visited my brother in Colorado Springs the clubs were pretty good. Course, this was back in 1994...

NY is getting close to 170,000 layoffs, its going on everywhere. Is that why you think Denver is a terrible place to live?

Actually, I'll only take a 5G cut, about 2% less. Figure in cost of living comparison, I'll be doing well and could afford a home there, easy.

Minimum wage bullshit jobs are about the same wherever you go. But here in NY you can't survive on 9 or 10 bucks an hour when rent is well over a grand for some shithole. Out there you got descent places in real complexes for less than half that. Plus utilities are a lot cheaper.

Yep, I like to sit on a big rock in the rushing Boulder Creek in the spring and meditate. Then jump in the snow-melt rushing waters, and bike home.

But I understand if this is not most people's idea of fun! LOL

Denver's red-light district is rumored to be east Colfax. I have a buddy who lived in just that area- he says the folks who live there are pretty nice- he compared that particular ghetto to "Sesame Street, with crack".
The 16th Street Mall is a fun place to go.
The National Western Stockshow is great if you like ranch stuff.
The Zoo is great and it has a nice park around it.

I'll pass on that one. Everything else you said is good though. ;) I also forgot to mention all the friendly faces. I've never been in a more friendly town than Boulder. Everyone smiles and waves on the bike trails, everyone has a good attitude, and if someone is feeling down, they at least won't pass it on to you. If you see me on my bike on a trail, smile and wave, because I'll do it to you first. :)

Boulder is starting to sound inviting, instead of settling in Southwest Denver.

It's expensive here, I suggest doing a google search to bring up what you want. Littleton is only 25 miles away however.

I had moved to Denver from Seattle a few years back and I returned to Seattle after 5 years. I can only imagine the NYC jump will be more of a culture shock than Seattle was.

Before I get jumped on, lemme say I met a lot of nice people with good hearts and that does not reflect on my opinion about Denver or Colorado in general. I visit Denver often and it has a unique personality that can't be explained. However, long term it was not my cup of tea.

This is from the perspective of a then artsy 30ish female who likes a variety of music, arts (shows, clubs, gallerys), styles and foods who isn't big on sports.
It's beautiful (jaw droppingly beautiful) and there is plenty to do if you like the outdoors (hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing) and the Broncos. For me, after the beauty part was fully appreciated I found I didn't quite "fit in". I felt for a large city it had a limited perspective.

You will miss food most -authentic Asian, Japanese and Thai, fresh seafood, real pizza and any other ethnic food (Greek, Italian) you may enjoy. I missed good coffee but that’s a Seattle thing. However you will taste the best Mexican food ever.

Flip side -

My husband's family made the same move and they love it there. They fell into a nice town outside the city (north) and love the small town life with easy access to the city/mountains.
