Re: Moving to Denver /Boulder from NYC - thoughts appreciated
I had moved to Denver from Seattle a few years back and I returned to Seattle after 5 years. I can only imagine the NYC jump will be more of a culture shock than Seattle was.

Before I get jumped on, lemme say I met a lot of nice people with good hearts and that does not reflect on my opinion about Denver or Colorado in general. I visit Denver often and it has a unique personality that can't be explained. However, long term it was not my cup of tea.

This is from the perspective of a then artsy 30ish female who likes a variety of music, arts (shows, clubs, gallerys), styles and foods who isn't big on sports.
It's beautiful (jaw droppingly beautiful) and there is plenty to do if you like the outdoors (hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing) and the Broncos. For me, after the beauty part was fully appreciated I found I didn't quite "fit in". I felt for a large city it had a limited perspective.

You will miss food most -authentic Asian, Japanese and Thai, fresh seafood, real pizza and any other ethnic food (Greek, Italian) you may enjoy. I missed good coffee but that’s a Seattle thing. However you will taste the best Mexican food ever.

Flip side -

My husband's family made the same move and they love it there. They fell into a nice town outside the city (north) and love the small town life with easy access to the city/mountains.

I live in Boulder, absolutely love it here. Mostly because I am an outdoorsy person. If you're expecting a thriving nightlife or club scene like what NYC has, you are looking at the wrong city.

anyhow OP, i'll be going back to Colorado for good probably summer of next year. can't wait to start up school at CSU and what not.

It doesn't snow as much as most people think. maybe in the colorado springs area but not much in most parts. it does snow a lot in the mountains but the climate is steppe, which is semi-dessert. so yeah it is kind of dry there.

there isn't much i can think of that makes Colorado sucks. just the traffic is about it. personally, one day i would like to move up to laporte or Bellevue or estes park, somewhere in the mountains but not even in any kind of city would be cool to me. my dad is from Bellevue and it is a nice life for folks in their late 30's and 40s i'd say.

Considering a move to Denver, Southwest near the foothills. Any thoughts from others who have moved from NY or elsewhere to Denver, or lifetime Denver resident comments welcome.

If you moved there from NY, are you going to stay since you love it so much?

If you moved to Denver from somewhere else, do you want to stay?

Or, are you in NY or elsewhere and want to get out of Dodge and are moving to Denver as well?

thx.

Denver has a more laid back atmosphere than any city in the east. However, it has grown tremendously over the last decade or so...Still, it's not too bad. If you enjoy being outdoors and are into the mountains, you'll enjoy a lot about the state. I was born in Denver, though I have moved around a lot and have lived in many other cities. I keep coming back to Colorado. I still live in the state, but now I'm in the mountains. I love where I am.
You are correct that alternative energy is making big inroads here. The governer has a big energy inititive going on and the state is diving in to wind power, and solar. You can find out more about the energy intititive by visiting the state web page, and clicking on the energy intitive. I get regular updates.

using criagslist for newyork stuff is a MUST.

come light, you can find just about anything... Also don't expect to live in a 'nice' place in Manhattan for under 15k a month.

That's right, $15,000.00 a MONTH rent.

It's the 3rd most expensive place in the world to live (London then Moscow.. yeah go figure).

Anyways Brooklyn or Queens may be a good place to look... Or even out in Long Island...

Although if you have a car, check LongIsland...

the public transit is CHEAP in NYC... when you compare a car note & insurance... the metro cards like like $77 a month.... unlimited rides!

My wife and I moved to Denver from L.A. about 10 years ago. So far we love it here. I don't think we would consider moving anywhere else in the near future.

Every city has +'s and -'s but all in all, Denver is a great city to live in.

Re: Moving to Denver /Boulder from NYC - thoughts appreciated
The stereotype for the country is, that if you are from New York City and you move anywhere, you will act overly aggressive and demanding when it comes to social interactions. IE...like an asshole. Behavior typically used in New York to motivate city employees, slow overworked waiters, hotel clerks etc will NOT be favorably received throughout the rest of the nation.

So if you should find yourself beginning to become demanding, or loud, then recognize that this type of behavior is A) probably unnecessary to motivate someone, and B) probably counter productive in places where they will tell you to go fuck yourself for being overly obnoxious.

Having worked in a hotel for few years out west, I quickly learned to dread the arrival of people from Los Angeles, and New York. These two groups typically were more demanding, condescending and frankly arrogant. They tended to treat the rest of the nation like it was a suburb of New York or Los Angeles rather than feel their way thru local cultures. Coming to the Southwest and asking for the local Italian pizza place, or delicatessen was pretty common.

Be aware of the culture shock you will experience and how you will impact the culture you move into.

thx, I can say I'm guilty of those 'feelings' when visiting outside of NYC or even my home town. After being here 25 yrs, the 'speed' and 'pace' on the city forces you to move faster in all facets of your life. It is a cyccle that must be broken when going elsewhere, and I'll be very mindfull of that. thank you.

Re: Moving to Denver /Boulder from NYC - thoughts appreciated
Colorado is unique. The lifestyle is laid back. The people are more friendly than most parts of the country. There is just something special about Colorado. It's definitely a different way of life than someone from places like LA, NYC, and Chicago would be accustomed to.

Pros: more casual, less stress, lower cost of living, dog friendly, the spectacular beauty of the mountains, it's true that there isn't a lot of bugs like roaches and fleas, great place to raise a family

Cons: not as good public transportation or wide variety of cuisine, and it's DRY (expect your skin and hair to feel super parched until you acclimate), not as wide variety of cultural activities than in California or NY.

Colorado is the fittest state in the U.S., with the least amount of obese people. There ia a lot of outdoor activities to keep people moving.

The weather can be cold during the winter months, with occasional blizzard conditions, but in general it's more sunny and warm in Colorado than most non-Coloradans realize.

If you live in the suburbs of Denver or Colorado Springs, or in one of the mountain towns, expect to see a wide variety of wildlife in your backyard on a day to day basis - deer (scads), skunks, mountain lions, bears, foxes, coyotes, hummingbirds, racoons, rabbits, and the occasional bigfoot peeking in your window or rummaging through your trash.

thx, when I visited Denver a few years back for my sis's wedding, the feeling I got was 'unique', exactly. And the beauty, friendlier. I wouldn't miss NYC roaches! The weather I think is similar to NYC, except it is much drier out there for sure. Regarding wildlife, I was just talking to my sis today and she was telling me about the racoons? cyotees? hanging around from time to time, so have to be careful with my cat in the back yard.

Thanks for taking time to share.

I once thought I wanted to live in Colorado, but I learned that the winters there can really suck (ice on the roads in Colorado Springs can really screw things up a bit). That, and there's some crazy shit going on there having to do with that airport, the NWO, etc. If I ever move to Colorado, it will be to Durango, but no farther north.
