Firearms Question
I need advice on what firearms to purchase. They would be used primarily for home / personal defense. I'm not experienced when it comes to firearms so whatever I do I'll be getting training and will go to a range to learn and practice. I live in Virginia and may even consider concealed carry permit. I'm looking to purchase a shotgun or semi-auto rifle and a handgun. Can't spend too much so would be looking for a balance between value and quality and would even consider a used firearm. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Shotgun Mossburg 500 , 590, winchester 1300 Defender, or Remington 870. All pump action.

Pistol go for a revolver in .357. S&W or Taurus.

Semi Auto rifle depends on what you are gonna use it for.

What kinda money are we talkin'?

Dude, I think you could find about 100 threads answering this question in the archive.

However, it seems to be a popular form of chit-chat nonetheless.

Would like to spend $500 or less on each so nothing to fancy. If I went with a semi-auto rifle (versus shotgun) would be used for occasional target practice and home / property defense only. I'd love to get an M1 Garand but I think those are out of my price range. Just not sure the practicality of it though.

i wouldn't take a 357 magnum for home defense, unless you were going to load it with 38 specials (assuming there are children and women in the home also)

For home defense Id go with a 45 ACP chambered Glock, Heckler and Koch USP, or 1911 (the old reliables, you want something you can hang your life off).

As a semi auto rifle, go with either a 308 NATO (expensive) or 7.62x39mm AK cartridge. Look for a DSA FAL or PTR-91 for the 308, and any eastern European AK47 makes (Romanian, polish, ect... just don't get a Chinese AK since they are finicky about magazines sometimes)

I dont want to start a WW3 fight on whats better, AR15s or AK47s, if you want an AR15 (i do not explicitly like them for defense or the 223 round for defense) go with Stag Arms or Bushmaster, there are other decent makes also.

As for a shotgun, pumps are traditionally more reliable and do not have as many problems with failing to feed or failing to eject, and are far cheaper in most cases. I'd go with a Mossberg 500A, or a benelli super 90 in 12 gauge.

If it came down to just 1 single weapon for home defense from intruders, no conventional firearm beats a shotgun with 00 buck. Period.

Buy the shotgun and pistol used to save and allocate more for the semi auto. Consider a FN/FAL in .308 great battle rifle for the money Trench on this forum can tell ya's all about it.

I do not recommend a semi auto pistol for newbies unless they are prepared to practice practice practice clearing jams. My two cents.

You won't find a Fal or AR15 for less than $800 now, probably more. Seems like 1000 is a popular figure anymore, used.

Stick with 9mm's. Higher caliber will be outlawed soon and thus making the ammo expensive if not impossible to get.

Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm Compact, Glock G19 and Sig Sauer P229. All excellent guns, compact for good concealment, and powerful (with the right ammo).

Like all mechanical things they are subject to failure at exactly the wrong time. That being said, I pack this Kimber, never jammed on me yet, although I hold no illusions....

I hold my pistols to a high standard, they fail, they're gone. It's that simple. Clips do get damaged, but that's not what i'm talking about. If it jams for no obvious reason...bye bye.

Re: Firearms Question
OP,

I recently went through the same process you are going through and still have only enough knowledge to be dangerous. But its been fun learning. I purchased a 20 gauge Remmington 870 for $270 from walmart and even got a 50 dollar rebate so 230 for a new gun was a good deal for me. I soon learned that ammo for the 20 was much less common than the 12 and the ammo that was available was less useful for home defense. So I just purchased a 12 gauge matching pump shotgun 270 also and now have one for my wife and one for myself to use. So I'm out maybe 600 bucks but have a nice base to build upon. Hand guns take a bit more knowledge than something like a shotgun. It all depends on what type of budget you have. A friend recently purchased a used Glock for mid 300 on Buds guns.

Get a 12 gauge mossberg 500 home and field combo, comes with a short tactical barrel with a nice muzzle brake, and a hunting barrel for squirrel, birds, turkey etc, Only $300 at Cabelas. A great deal considering the barrels are like $150 each.

Springfield Armory XD 45 for pistol

Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 series

For anything under 50 yards this is the combo. The shotty doesn't require a whole lot of training.

You bring up an excellent point about the 20g shotgun. Everywhere I read that 20 were best and easiest to handle, especially for women. In my area most stores only carried dove or waterfowl shot, no buckshot for the 20g. (Plenty though for the 12g.)

After handling both a Mossberg 20g and a Remington 870 express youth model, as a woman, the youth model was much easier to handle due to weight. I highly recommend it if you have women or smaller men in your household. Just be prepared to purchase your defense ammo online.

This ammo was highly recommended by online forums and I have ordered from Midway in the past and they are very good.
