All pump action. Quoting: OmegaPistol go for a revolver in .357. S&W or Taurus. Semi Auto rifle depends on what you are gonna use it for. What kinda money are we talkin'? Would like to spend $500 or less on each so nothing to fancy. If I went with a semi-auto rifle (versus shotgun) would be used for occasional target practice and home / property defense only. I'd love to get an M1 Garand but I think those are out of my price range. Just not sure the practicality of it though. |

Defleshed User ID: 495859 United States 12/30/2008 09:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 357mag handgun Quoting: Anonymous Coward 53184930 x 30 rifle i wouldn't take a 357 magnum for home defense, unless you were going to load it with 38 specials (assuming there are children and women in the home also) For home defense Id go with a 45 ACP chambered Glock, Heckler and Koch USP, or 1911 (the old reliables, you want something you can hang your life off). As a semi auto rifle, go with either a 308 NATO (expensive) or 7.62x39mm AK cartridge. Look for a DSA FAL or PTR-91 for the 308, and any eastern European AK47 makes (Romanian, polish, ect... just don't get a Chinese AK since they are finicky about magazines sometimes) I dont want to start a WW3 fight on whats better, AR15s or AK47s, if you want an AR15 (i do not explicitly like them for defense or the 223 round for defense) go with Stag Arms or Bushmaster, there are other decent makes also. As for a shotgun, pumps are traditionally more reliable and do not have as many problems with failing to feed or failing to eject, and are far cheaper in most cases. I'd go with a Mossberg 500A, or a benelli super 90 in 12 gauge. If it came down to just 1 single weapon for home defense from intruders, no conventional firearm beats a shotgun with 00 buck. Period. |

Thomas Newton User ID: 424872 United States 12/30/2008 10:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP, I recently went through the same process you are going through and still have only enough knowledge to be dangerous. But its been fun learning. I purchased a 20 gauge Remmington 870 for $270 from walmart and even got a 50 dollar rebate so 230 for a new gun was a good deal for me. I soon learned that ammo for the 20 was much less common than the 12 and the ammo that was available was less useful for home defense. So I just purchased a 12 gauge matching pump shotgun 270 also and now have one for my wife and one for myself to use. So I'm out maybe 600 bucks but have a nice base to build upon. Hand guns take a bit more knowledge than something like a shotgun. It all depends on what type of budget you have. A friend recently purchased a used Glock for mid 300 on Buds guns. This forum has many wise people like Omega and many more that will guide you on your way... good luck! |

Was out of work for 7 months (victim of layoff) but just recently found a new job in a different city. So can't spend much on either a pistol or long gun. I think that a 12 guage shotgun is where I'll go first. |

This forum has many wise people like Omega and many more that will guide you on your way... good luck! You bring up an excellent point about the 20g shotgun. Everywhere I read that 20 were best and easiest to handle, especially for women. In my area most stores only carried dove or waterfowl shot, no buckshot for the 20g. (Plenty though for the 12g.) After handling both a Mossberg 20g and a Remington 870 express youth model, as a woman, the youth model was much easier to handle due to weight. I highly recommend it if you have women or smaller men in your household. Just be prepared to purchase your defense ammo online. This ammo was highly recommended by online forums and I have ordered from Midway in the past and they are very good. [link to www.midwayusa.com] Good luck in your search OP! |
