1) It is Summertime in Antartica
2) Except during the summer they can NOT rotate people in and out of Antartica
3) Each year the crews in Antartica are almost 100% replaced (one long winter mostly underground is about all most people can mentally take).

So .... if they are going to rotate out nearly 100% of those there ... and it is summer there... and it is the only time of the year they can do the rotation .... don´t you morons think that YEAH ... those who worked in Antartica during it´s last winter are going to be coming home en-mass?

Notice that the article did NOT say that new people weren´t being sent there ... just that those there are coming home ... WHICH IS WHAT THEY DO EVERY FRICKIN YEAR AT THIS TIME MORONS!! (winter here ... summer there, right??)

Sorry, but this is complete nonsense.

The full story is that they´re trying to get supplies into the base (as they do every year at this time). They normally use two icebreakers to get through the pack ice, but this year one of the US ships is being repaired, so they´ve asked the Russians to help out by sending one of their ships round to lend a hand.

There are (if I remember correctly) about 1200 people at McMurdo, and they need a huge amount of supplies brought in to see them through the year, so a ship is the only way to get that amount of stuff in.

The supply ships and icebreakers wouldn´t be able to take that many people on board. And anyway, if they wanted to evacuate, why not just fly everyone out? Why send icebreakers and supply ships? That´s a huge waste of time and money if they´re abandoning the base. And why alert the Russians to a problem by getting them involved?

News sources are alleging supply ships cannot deliver their cargoes. Why the need for icebreakers when helicopters ferries supplies?

Interfax spoke of rescue/evacuation! They cannot fly anyone out because the runways are mush. Airdrop supplies occurr by parachute much of the year including summer...if need be. Conventional shipping is increasingly reluctant to head into Antartic waters because of the present maze of icebergs.

The large Russian "embarrassment", the Krasin, is capable of ferrying equipment and 5000 people to and fro the US McMurdo to New Zealand or Tasmania with great alacrity.

Look, it is not fucking normal to send the Russoans to evacuate a place that is normally home to 1,200 people and now there was 5,000. That is FU for starters.
