Actually could have been a trailing companion to the big asteroid ...alot of times big ones have smaller ones coming along with it...they get bumped out there and end up going any which way...
The gravitational field of the asteroid pulls the smaller ones along for awhile then they spread out...and eventually get bumped by another space rock and change direction.
