All Antarctica 'seems' to be warming, report says. !?!?
All Antarctica seems to be warming, report says

San Francisco Chronicle

2009-01-22

The climate trend that is raising temperatures across most of the world is warming all of Antarctica despite earlier signs that most of the ice-covered continent has cooled during the past 50 years, researchers are reporting Thursday.

The scientists stop short of claiming with certainty that wind-borne greenhouse gases from global industries on other continents are responsible for Antarctica's warming, but they say their evidence makes them "almost certain" that human activity carries at least some of the blame.

For years the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, whose scientists track global warming year by year, has reported that greenhouse gases and global warming have clearly hit six of the world's seven continents, but that the evidence from Antarctica is still unclear. West Antarctica is known to be warming strongly, but the climate of the much larger eastern area was said to be cooling, some scientists have argued.

Now the issue has apparently been resolved.

In a report published Thursday in the journal Nature, climatologists Eric Geist of the University of Washington and Drew Shindell of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies say that FOR the FIRST TIME they combined satellite observations over the entire continent with evidence from more than 100 manned and unmanned weather stations both inland and along the continent's coasts to determine climate trends for the past 50 years.

During an hour-long teleconference Wednesday, the scientists said their data clearly shows that on average the entire Antarctic continent has been gradually warming at least since 1957.

West Antarctica, separated from the far larger eastern part by the towering Transantarctic mountain range, has long evidenced a strong warming trend. And the Antarctic Peninsula, warmer than everywhere else in the western region, is where massive ice shelves have collapsed into the sea as springtime temperatures rise above the melting point there.

But East Antarctica has been a very different story. Here, many scientists have contended that the huge region has been cooling over the past half-century.

A leading scientist who has long collected data supporting that cooling argument conceded, in an e-mail to The Chronicle on today, that the evidence in the new report "lends confidence" that the new findings on Antarctic temperature trends "are robust."

Andrew Monaghan of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., also was impressed by the new findings and said he's convinced that greenhouse gases - known as "anthropogenic" influences - have played a role in warming Antarctica's climate.

"My opinion is that anthropogenic impacts - through both greenhouse gases and stratospheric ozone - are having a discernible impact on Antarctic climate variability and will continue to do so," Monaghan said.

During today's teleconference, Shindell said wind patterns across Antarctica make it difficult to pin down the role of greenhouse gases in warming the continent, but human activity in the world's other continents should be added in as an influence pushing Antarctic temperatures up.

"We're almost certain that increases in greenhouse gases on other continents are contributing to this warming in Antarctica," Shindell said.

Scientists have been severely hindered in studying the icy continent's climate trends because most manned weather stations are located along the accessible coasts. But Geist said his team was able to gather valuable satellite data covering the past 25 years. They then combined that data with records from unmanned stations located inland and left by visiting scientists over the years since the International Geophysical Year of 1957.

The result, Geist said, was a combined record clearly showing that East Antarctica, too has been warming over the past 50 years - although warming on the continent's western side has been twice as rapid.

While the numbers are complicated, the team's evidence indicates that over the entire Antarctic continent - where year-round temperatures average nearly 50 degrees below zero - the average temperature increase for the past 50 years has been half a degree Celsius, or just under one full degree Fahrenheit, Geist said.

One degree may not seem like much, but a two-degree global increase - universally forecast before the end of this century - would pose major threats to world stability.

Scientists predict that food crops would die in some regions and increase in others, and rising sea levels, caused by melting ice, would drown many low-lying coasts and islands, particularly in developing nations where poverty is already endemic.

A lot to read and digest but the reason I am
posting this is because the 'Canary in the Coalmine'
Sir Peter Blake (deceased)a very highly respected world class yachtsman sounded the alarm in 2001
" Antarctica is melting "
but his warning was ignored.

Some scientists even today are still
largely ignoring the warning which Blake issued
EIGHT years ago in February 2001.

The truth about Antartica

article dated Feb 2001
"Antarctica Is Melting Before Our Eyes"

[link to www.independent.co.uk]

quote:

"The explorer and yachtsman Sir Peter Blake called the ministers attending the governing council of the United Nations Environment Programme

to say that he had just sailed 100 miles through open water that had been frozen for hundreds of thousands of years.

The King George VI ice shelf at the base of the
Antarctic peninsula was breaking up, he said.
"

.

An urgent and very dramatic report from Sir Peter Blake.

Read it for your own sake and that
of your children because whereas
Blake was extremely concerned about the
future, it appears that scientists
today are not.

this is the coldest summer i can remember.

bs, antarctica is not supposed to be always icy.

it used to be green and there are fossil forests under the ice.

this is not caused by warming but shifting ocean currents.

the warmer scientists are dumber than shit fresh from a dog.

fuck u warmer bitches!

Its normal. Piri Reis map confirms that Antartica wasnt always covered in ice. Someone mapped the ground under the snow in ancient times...see below;

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 598415

One of the problems with gauging the effects of greenhouse gasses in Antarctica is that the hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica has caused cooling in the upper atmosphere, which has strengthened the circular winds around the continent, which has slowed the warming on the interior of the continent. So between the hole in the ozone layer caused by CFCs, or greenhouse gasses, there is a man-made effect on the climate in Antarctica.

There is volcanic activity in the Antarctic which could be greater than thought because much of it has not been surveyed.

I was watching something on TV the other day that said the arctic ice is melting three times faster than it was only a decade ago, and if it continues at that rate, the whole lot will be gone in about 30 - 40 years, raising global sea level by about 20 feet.

That was the good news, though. The antarctic has always been considered as 'safe'...but now that has started melting also at an alarming rate. And that contains eleven times more ice than the arctic.

Meaning that sea levels could easily rise by about 200 feet, within a generation.

Scientists are increasingly alarmed, apparently.

The Arctic is volcanically active as well and this is something which we cannot control, however we should tackle pollution but I do not subscribe to the theory that it is driving global warming or polar melting.

So instead of minus 50 degrees it's on average minus 49 degrees...not really shocking or dramatic nor does it explain massive melt (if true)...

Please, continue to ignore (active) volcanoes and (changing) sea currents...

Pretty long article to tell you that the temperature in Antartica has risen one degree Farenheit over a period of fifty years.

This is what the panic is over?

This is why they want to further tax us to death and ruin the economy?

You people can't see anything wrong with this farce?

And if memory serves me correctly years ago they were talking about differences of five degrees Farenheit.

Now after more than a decade of talking about tis issue the real change is one degree farenheit over 50 years?

Give me a friggen break.

The real truth is they don't even have a large enough database over a large enough amount of time in that area (Antartica) to really draw any significant conclusions on what's happening.

Another aspect that's always bothered me in all this is I have yet to see a conclusive scale presented that states exactly what temperature rise is to be expected from any numbered rise in parts per million of CO2.

Re: All Antarctica 'seems' to be warming, report says. !?!?
It comes down to this simple fact.

Either the world is currently warming significantly...

Or tens of thousands of Climatologists are in on the biggest scam ever, faking data and lying openly and often to everyone that will listen with incredible levels of acting skill that has never been seen before in any group of scientists.

Sure, 'thousands' of 'scientists' have said that global warming is a scam...

The fact that we can only find a handful of them to talk to and that most of them seem to be getting money from the oil and coal industries for saying what they are...

That could be happenstance!

Maybe the only people with our best interests at heart ARE what we could call BIG CARBON....

For my part, I am going to hedge my bet an assume for the time being that no one would be stupid enough to fake global warming or smart enough to fake it just as massive weather and climate changes become apparent.

So, what does this mean?

Frankly, we need to get off our lazy, "God will save us", "It's not happening because I'm scared of it" behinds and figure out what we are going to do as individuals.

Sure, it's NOT fair that we have to change our lives to survive this and to try and fix it for future generations!

But you know what?

The universe doesn't care about fair. It doesn't even care if we respond and try to live at all!

It just is and will follow it's own path regardless of what we choose!

:)

We can choose to do something or do nothing, but it is still a choice!

D.
And all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "save us!"

And I'll look down and whisper "No."

 Quoting: Dancer (Unchained)

I don't think anyone is faking it. If the Earth is indeed warming, then it is most likely due to natural forces. In the past, the Earth has been warmer and cooler than it is now. I think the scientists are grasping at anything that may explain whatever warming or cooling the Earth is experiencing.
Personally, I think we should embrace global warming. Sure, perhaps we will have to move further away from the coasts, but what about the growing season? We would be able to grow food crops in areas we never have before. Perhaps some of the produce normally restricted to growing in the tropics would be able to be grown in many other areas (coffee, bananas, mangoes, etc). The "food shortages" we are having would be a thing of the past. We can live and flourish in a warmer climate. In a colder climate, the growing season and the ares in which we can grow food decreases dramatically. Global cooling could wreck our civilization. Global Warming would only enhance it. If you use this type of thinking, then the question becomes this....Why are the World leaders trying to stop something that would ultimately give us more food and a better quality of life? (answer-money and power) And why do some people follow them blindly down that path (answer-sheep)? I say bring on the heat and thrive. It would be a great thing for humanity if it were warmer. Ice and cold kills crops and humans.
