Iran sends domestic satellite to orbit

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran has successfully sent its first domestically made satellite into orbit, state radio reported Tuesday, another development in the country's ambitious space program that has worried many international observers.

The satellite called Omid, or hope in Farsi, was launched late Monday after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gave the order to proceed, according to the radio report. State television also showed footage of what it said was the satellite blasting off in the darkness from an unidentified location in Iran.

The reports could not be independently verified by outside observers. Some western observers have accused Tehran of exaggerating its space program.

Iran has long held the goal of developing a space program, generating unease among world leaders already concerned about its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. One of the worries associated with Iran's fledgling space program is that the same technology used to put satellites into space can also be used to deliver warheads.

The satellite was taken into orbit by a Safir-2, or ambassador-2 rocket, which was first tested in August and has a range of 155 miles.

How developed is it?Despite the anxiety by the U.S. and its allies over Iran's space program, it is not exactly clear how developed it is.

In 2005, Iran launched its first commercial satellite on a Russian rocket in a joint project with Moscow, which appears to be the main partner in transferring space technology to Iran. Also in 2005, the government said it had allocated $500 million for space projects in the next five years.

Iranian officials first started developing the satellite, which weighs 27 kilograms (60 pounds), in 2006.

Iran has said it wants to put its own satellites into orbit to monitor natural disasters in the earthquake-prone nation and improve its telecommunications. Iranian officials also point to America's use of satellites to monitor Afghanistan and Iraq and say they need similar abilities for their security.

Iran hopes to launch three more satellites by 2010, the government has said.

The radio says the satellite launched Monday is designed to circle the earth 15 times during a 24-hour period and send reports to the space center in Iran. It has two frequency bands and eight antennas for transmitting data.

I think this is great.
Because once they develop more space technology, we'd be getting space-related information from someone else than ESA and NASA.

I think Iran is an amazing country...

They've suffered a generation of sanctions, isolation, war, and the overthrow of their government and still they remain; not only that, but they thrive in a region where all other seem to fail.

A country isolated from the rest of the world is developing its own military, it's own space program and its own nuclear program. Not even the US can boast this feat.. The US has always imported the best mind from around the world rather than creating them locally.

Well done Iran.

Must give it to these guys. They have been under world sanctions for 30 years now and they have achieved most things that other developing countries only dream of. They have their own home built militery hardware, nuclear technology and polotically they are a super power in the region.
Perhaps that is why the West has to think twice before trying to attack Iran. I use the word trying because they will have to try really hard to topple the government in Iran.
BTW, did you know that the co founders of both Google and E-bay are Iranians?

Re: *** BREAKING *** : IRAN SENDS SATELLITE TO ORBIT -UPDATE P2 US Official says launce is of GREAT CONCERN [WTH?]
Albert Pike says that the third world war will be between the Muslim countries and her allies and Israel together with the West. I think that was wishfull thinking on his part and TPTB. To day the world is changing. People are waking up and the likes of Pike and TPTB have missed the boat. They are out now and a new era has begun.
Just think. Bush and NeoCons were brought in to specifically start a world domination and possibly start a new world war. They tried and tried but it could not be done.
The battles that the Bible has talked about has already started and is coming to the end as we speak. It was a spiritual war between the forces of evil and greed against humanity and love for each other. Clearly many will ask if the Bible was wrong because they did not see a physical armagedon. But i say to you that the real war has already happened within our minds. Our spiritual awakening has gone in to war with the greed of NeoCons and is now winning. Of course some of this spiritual war will spill in to the physical war (like Iraq, Afganistan and Israel attacking Lebenon and Gaza) but that is as far as it goes. Just take a look around. The whole world now thinks different towards Israel as it has done before.
We are seeing the begining of human awakening and the realisation that truth is different than what we have been told all these years.
Ever asked yourself how is it that USA in a matter of months has gone from one type of policy to a totally different one? USA has been defeated. The forces of evil have been defeated. TPTB that were holding the whole world as hostages have been defeated. They are gone and America has a lot of work to do in order to convince the rest of the world that she is clean now.
It is going to be a difficult task because.
A/ there are still those who are loyal to the evil of the past that are not willing to let go. They have had it too good all these times and will not go without a fight.
B/ No one trusts USA for what they have done.

It is not surprising therefore that countries such as Iran do not trust America and rightly so they are asking America to appologise for the miss-deed they have done over the years. If USA is genuine in changing their attitude then saying sorry is an acknowlegment of the evil they have done in the past and proof of their changing ways.
However if they refuse then it is evident that USA is not ready and does not deserve to be trusted just as yet.

You are correct. By himself he is not a new era but the attitude of America as a whole is a new era and his selection somewhat is an indication of the change USA is going through right now.

I would just like to point out that this is..well, unlikely.

1. The rocket itself has 155 mile range which would mean its sub-orbital. There are certain basic laws of rocket propulsion that are hard to change.Namely, the law of gravity. Even if they put nothing but fuel in it and no payload, the rocket itself would be hard pressed to send anything into orbit.

2. The payload was under 30 kilos. Unless they have contracts to buy mini sats from the few countries in the world, its probably a few batteries and a camcorder.

Again, its a hell of an accomplishment if real.I don't mean to detract from that. But I would not consider Iran anywhere near a space capable country.

That includes ICBM's btw.

And what brings you to this conclusion?
30 years of sanctions. By any standards any other country would have collapsed after 5 years. Not only Iran has survived but they have started to produce everything they need from militery to domestic.
Do you not know that the lack of having something will force one to create one?
What you know of Iran is what you have been told by media. If you had come across Iranians such as i have then you would think different.
You have the working class Iranians who are somewhat uneducated but very understanding , hospitable and kind.
You are the middle class Iranians that are very educated, intelligent and very very innovative. Google and Ebay were both Co founded by Iranians living in USA.
Then you have the upper class Iranians that are as much an assholes as TPTB are (its the same all over the world)

Because while they are comforting themselves that Iran is a backward country and is not capable of any technology, these guys are slowly but surely catching up and possibly overtake in some areas.
