The ex-husband of a woman shot dead in a Christmas Eve massacre has been asked to pay her rent.
Her landlord claims Alicia Ortiz broke her lease and gave 'insufficient notice to vacate' before she was killed.
Ortiz and her 17-year-old son were among nine people gunned down by her sister's disgruntled ex-husband after he went on the rampage dressed in a Santa suit.
Alicia Ortiz (left) was shot dead by Bruce Pardo (right) at a Christmas party. He killed eight other people, including her son MIchael

Her landlord, Broadcrest Foothill Apartment Homes, told Ortiz's former husband, Carlos, that he owes $2,821 in rent and penalties.
Mr Ortiz said: 'I just don't understand it.'

Pardo had no criminal record or history of violence.

bills and rent don't disappear when a person dies.
it's the surviving family members' responsibility to tie up all of the various loose ends after a person's death. it may seem crass, but it's the truth.

as to why the ex-husband has been tagged for this responsibility, i'm not sure. it could be a case where they split up after moving into the apartment but left his name on the lease.

the problem is that her surviving family members did not give notice to the landlord after the fact. this same subject is most likely in every rental agreement.

What about the deposit and first months rent we usually give when renting. Jesum Crow this is what is wrong with our world. A decent human being would swallow it and be grateful it didn't happen to someone he loved.

they can't rent out the apartment until it's been cleared of all the person's belongings. that's not the landlord's responsibility.

granted, i think the penalties are harsh here, but the landlord has lost out on that rent for probably two months now.
