I also raised in the South in the 50's, and yes Hate was the right word to use. I even remember as late as 1974 in Ore City Texas on a Laundromat painted in big bold white letters "WHITES ONLY" I remember my first days in a segregated school . I remember the Town was seperated by the railroad tracks. Those were harsh times in the South. |

I guess I am a little younger than you. I never knew about the "Jim Crowe" laws and how black people were treated until I was in college. I remember asking my family about it...being all upset, and yes, they confirmed that that was how it was back then. They did not like it, but did not know of a way to change things. I grew up in an intergrated school, so had friends of all races. I remember my family being all upset over George Wallace. I was young and really did not know what all that was about. There are people who see each other as people, not color, even in Dixie. Unfortunately, there are small minded people who are not willing to change. |
