Talking about Soundgarden, RATM, Tool, Alice in Chains etc like they never gained fame, influence or recognition. That Nirvana stole their thunder?? It's a bit of a stretch. Quoting: Dozan Hertz.Lots of people, including myself, loved Nirvana. And they are supremely important for their time and place in rock history. Objectively, they may have worked on a smaller canvas than these other monsters of modern rock, but damn, they got a lot of people to pick up instruments for the first time and give it a go - and that is true influence. Slamming Nirvana is like poo-hooing the Hola hoop for being a lame piece of plastic. That's because the hoola-hoop is a stupid piece of plastic. You're talking to a cynic here, friend. I point out things that most are not willing to acknowledge or accept. Yes, Tool, RATM, Soundgarden, etc. got recognition... but not the recognition they deserved. Even to this day, idiots like some of the people in this thread place Nirvana on a pedestal that they in no way deserve to be on. As far as being an "influence"... Jimi Hendrix was also an influence. Except, Hendrix actually could play an instrument, and write good music. He also spawned generations of some of the greatest guitarists the world has ever known. What kind of musicians has Kurt inspired? From what I can tell, no band that has come out in the last ten years, know jack shit about music, how to write or perform it... and especially good music. No, what Nirvana did was give talentless twits an excuse to pick up a cheap Squier "Strat", form a shitty garage band, and play the same few chords over and over, to equally depressing and poorly written lyrics. So, in a way, I guess ol' Kurt kind of killed the music industry. The last great bands I've heard, I've already listed a hundred times. Everything else is contrived, derivative horse shit. They lived the dream- though Kurt Cobains dream ended up a fucking nightmare shooting heroin. Quoting: Cynical MindI am saying in the real world people need their real music, and Nirvana gave it to a segment in the culture, it cant be denied. Music is more than just talent. The guy or gal that captures the angst of life in rock music will be treasured. Nirvana captured it, and they will be remembered by many of us for it. Like all great artists, they moved on to other things. I'm sorry... I just hate their music. It's the most depressing horse shit I've ever been unfortunate enough to hear. You'll find more cheer in a fucking graveyard than in Nirvana's music. I mean, damn... it's no wonder the man killed himself, writing music like that. You don't sound very open minded or full of cheer yourself. You're a psychic vampire full of negative energy. Nirvana are the second-greatest band ever next to The Beatles. That's my opinion. |

I feel, that esp for people of a certain age, say 35-42 Nirvana was a very special band at a special time. More than others writers of that time, I feel that Kurt just saw through the veil and spoke what many felt. Fear Profits a Man Nothing. ~ |

That band was easily the single worst hair band to spawn out of the 80s (other than Stryper). But seriously... RATM kicks ass. People should have been burning flags and rioting instead of moping around and trying to overdose on Tylenol. Only now, in 2009 will people start to rise up against the powers that be, when RATM have been advocating it for nearly 20 years. Quoting: Cynical Mind I've never, ever seen a band as insanely overrated as Nirvana. I know a lot of people say bands like The Beatles are overrated... but at least The Beatles could actually play music worth a shit. For fuck's sake, man... all Nirvana was, was just a bunch of angst-ridden junkie teenagers. They didn't do anything great. There were tons of other bands out during the "grunge" era that mopped the floor with Nirvana... such as TOOL, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, and PEARL JAM. Seriously... fuck Nirvana. The band Nirvana was simply used for a cause, political purposes. Prior to Nirvana, rock music in America was a celebration of the white male. TPTB at MTV and the progressive intelligentsia used Nirvana to kill good time rock music and replace it with melancholy, neurotic misfit rock, ie: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction, etc. At the same time they pumped young white suburban skulls full of rap, which was basically just a glorification of the worst elements of urban ghetto life. It was no longer cool and fun to be young and white in America. |
