It was a murder/suicide. The music industry died with him. Regardless of what you think of their music, Nirvana actually led the way for a ton of great indie bands to do their own thing and stop trying to write the next "hit". At the time Nirvana hit, metal was just turning into a commercialized joke, aka the black album by Metallica. The album has some great songs, but they went full on mtv star mode and that led to the uber shit that is Fuel and Hero of the day and that awfulness, and to the band starting to act like boy models and posing for pics and really becoming a "product". Kill em all to And Justice....greatest period for metal all time. The music industry was eating itself with wanna be Bret Michaels leading terrible hair bands trying to write the next power ballad. It was awful. I remember sitting in a van and listening to Smells like Teen Spirit for the first time. We thought, what in the hell is this? We felt the music for the first time, and we connected with Kurt's attitude....basically that everything in music was fake corporate bullshit pushed to the masses, all for sales and to sell a t shirt. Kurt basically said, fuck that, here is my soul. Pained, sad, depressed, and full of angst....with a voice like crushed glass over a wall of fuzzy distortion. Nirvana had great melodies, great lyrics and it was real. And I love RATM too, but their would have been no RATM, or PJ, or AIC, or Soundgarden….maybe no Radiohead or Oasis. We could have had another decade of watching Poison in spandex. Grunge and Nirvana saved music. The internet totally killed it, as it has most everything else. |

The stuff that passes for music today is pretty sad. Thankfully, there's internet and satellite radio today so we don't have to listen to the terrible, sterile corporate rock they try to spoon feed us. For the record, I'll take Nirvana over RATM, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam any day of the week. |

Imagine buying a ticket for that concert and the weeks of anticipation leading up to the concert date. Imagine filing into the arena, butterflies in your stomach, awaiting an evening of intense joy and fun. Imagine what it must have been like to be in that stadium that night, the adrenaline that you would have felt with that opening riff of "Wild Side". Guess what! Someone was watching you. Someone was deciding that you young white kids were having too much fun. Your lives were too good. They had to change that. They had to replace a virile young, obviously heterosexual band with a neurotic, sweater-wearing misfit who sang about the ugly side of life, someone who would bring all you young white kids down with him, into the darkness, so your mind could be filled with dark thoughts, insecurities and fears. His name was Kurt. Rock didn't die. It was killed. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79066249 Motley Crue literally had a room full of writers that helped them come up with their music to make it as commercial as possible. They wore makeup and looked like trans women long before trans was a big thing. Vince Neil is an awful singer, total studio trickery. They sang about doing coke and trashy women and everything wrong with the world. Saying that they were a good thing is like saying, Coca Cola is great for you, it tastes so sweet. It is made by greedy Satanists who use it to hook kids and rot their teeth and kill them slowly, but c'mon. That is literally insane. Kurt wrote songs about teens being abused, depression, the fake commercial shit posing as music. It didn't depress kids or kill anything, it just showed the kids how awful and fake their older siblings music was. I can't believe anyone actually tried to make a hair band seem like a virtuous and positive thing. Those duded were all fake, all man whores and drugged out and they mostly sucked at music, they were picked for their appearance. Really. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77623184 United States 07/04/2020 10:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think all music is overrated. We Americans wasted way too much time listening to it and glorifying these people. They were our pied pipers. I should have listened to my parents and focused on math and science as I could have been a contender with a good paying job. |
