Dealing with the recession?
My renters,

He still has a job but got his pay cut.
I gave back part of their last rent payment.

"Rent goes back up when the pay goes back up."

Is this right or wrong?

Should any of us help anyone else or am I just being a jerk?

That is very honorable of you. Some may consider it idiocy. But to me, I'm highly religious and this how God intended people to act.

Re: Dealing with the recession?
if they are good tenants then it is probably better
to accept slightly less than have the place
vacant for a longer period.
Perhaps just clarify the situation with
a letter stating that the reduction in the rental
is for a period of no longer than 3 months when
it will be reviewed.
Get the tenants to sign that and give them a copy.

I'm not very religious, and just trying to do what I think is right.

Lease unchanged.
Just me deciding to make it easier for them to survive.

They were good neighbors for a year, renting a house nearby, before I chose to rent to them.

Wow that is very cool of you. He must be a good tenant for you to give him a break. But I agree, rent goes back up as soon as his income increases again. Makes total sense. You did not have to be so generous as to help him out. I would love to be your tenant !!

Wont you be pissed when next time you go in his house he has a brand new 50" plasma tv sitting there you helped him buy, seems to me like whenever you are nice to people shit like that happens
Dozens of them. Armed to the teeth. I'm outnumbered. Outgunned. But the alley is crooked, dark, and very narrow. They can't surround me. Sometimes you can beat the odds with a careful choice of where to fight.

Good for you, Himself!

If everyone would "just do the right thing" the world as a whole would be a better place.
Doing the right thing is not some phony-baloney "looove" thing... it's as simple as picking up that piece of trash instead of walking on by it and the bin; it's offering a helping hand when you see the need and you are able to give... like you've done here.

Thanks! You've brightened my day considerably and I hope this attitude is a virus that is highly contagious!
