Re: looking for an ak47
they all work just fine, for a below average weapon, they are shooters, reliable, not very accurate at all, milled receivers are the nicest, you can spend $900 on one if you wish

they are a great trunk gun, throw it in and forget about it with a few hundred rounds of ammo, it will fire if needed

get a fixed stock, plastic if you can, stay away from folding , telescopic butt stocks. 20 round mags fit in american tactical pouches better

how much experience do you have with weapons?

what do you envision being your threat?

ok, keep what you have, i would look at a 20" barrel AR-15, or any battle rifle in .308, G3 or FN/FAL, if you shop around you should have enough to get a few hundred rounds of ammo, cleaning kit, sling, and case for that money

unless you hunt with the 30-30, i would look at selling it and getting a military pump shotgun, such as the mossberg 590
if the .22 is a rifle, it will put food on your table

good luck! if you have anymore questions, let me know, go here for some ideas

Re: looking for an ak47
you picked a shitty time to buy. Prices have gone up quite a bit.

even on the romanian stuff. Most are running anywhere from 400-700 now just for WASR-10's

if you can find a chinse AK, expect to pay at least 2000 now or more.

You might have some luck with bulgarian variants.

milled receiver AK's are always more expensive, but now they are ridicolously priced.

Best AK's are Arsenal arms, they run between 800-1300$.(made in usa believe it or not)

Romanian are pretty good, and pretty cheap usually about 500$

The longest ones like 50 to 55 rounds are the hardest to load and I would think that spring will not last forever or very long if you keep them loaded for long. IF you can find a 75 or 100 round drum they are a little unweildy and haevy as well as a pain to load BUT when you get them loaded; then jst tur the winding handle just enough to put a tiny amount of tension on the spring and keep the rounds from falling out without tension. ALso keep in mind that a SKS which takes an AK mag is a good supplement or backup, Oten referred to as n SKK it will teka any AK mag BUT the drum cause the receiver/stock walls are too tall top to bottom and the "chimney" on top of the drum will not reach up in there far enough to lock in. In a pinch/emergency it looks as if you could gind down the bottom of the receiver walls and stock to allow this but it may weaken the overall package. I have read that some guys, in a place where AKs ae specifically banned by the language of the statute, SKKS have been substituted with equal effectiveness except for the drum question. I got 1-2 mags a payday back in the 90s and after buying 2 $4.oo mags and 2-3 boxes of Chicom steel jack/core ammo at $2.99 a box I looked around one day and found I had 32 mags with about 7-8 still in plastic with cosmoline or similar preservative. Those were the good old days.lol..the 90 ones as opposed to the 70s or 80s ones.

Re: looking for an ak47
Even though they've gone up quite a bit (think $4-450) for the money, the sks is hard to beat. You'll have a more accurate weapon. Easy to load with stripper clips. If you get interested in one look for a milled receiver. The Romanian and Yugo's arn't too bad. Keep the wood! Don't fancy it up-don't really need a scope etc.

Re: looking for an ak47
Malu had some great advice. I like the 7.62 for semi auto and .223/5.56 for auto it sounds like your not going the class III route. The AK-47 is a inaccurate weapon and even the race versions arent so hot. The FAL is widely produced and liscensed to many countries FN makes a good one. M1A also very nice and my favorite. Personally i would steer clear of AK's. It is a good reliable easy to clean weapon but at 200 yards its achilles heel is prominent.
