Do you really think stem cell research is going to lead to anything like that? Maybe they need to research salamander stem cells for that.

Re: I feel sick, Obama just overturned Bush policy on stem cells
oh please...

if you are old enough to remember that the christians were all up in arms about

birth control
test tube babies

and now millions of unwanted pregnancies are prevented without having to choose abortion thanks to birth control

and millions of couples are able to seek out fertility treatment and have a child thanks to that first test tube baby.

Why oh why are you people so afraid of letting scientists use the god given brains that were given to them and provide us with advances that help and heal???

do you not take antibiotics too?

OBAMA lied saying this ends the ban, there was no ban.

Bush is first president in history to allow...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 631052

Specifically, Bushy announced in August 2001 that for the first time federal funds will be used to research human embryonic stem cells, however, he stipulated that the federal money could not be used to research new embryonic stem cell lines. Researchers were limited to the cell lines already developed prior to 2001. The field of embryonic stem cell research was very, very new, in fact, the first embryonic stem cell line was created just 3 years prior to the Bush policy enactment. His policy limited further federally funded research to only the work that had been done in that first 3 groundbreaking years. It had a massive negative effect towards the innovation that had been going on in the field. Whole research projects dried up immediately after the policy was passed because it would have ran afoul of the federal grant money from NIS. I was in a project that was almost 3 years underway that was completely scrapped due to the policy Bush passed.

While Bush's policy was the first time federal money was used directly for stem cell research, it's a misnomer to think that NO federal money was being used up until that time. NIS was offering TONS of grants and paved the way to the discovery in 99, however, most of the stem cell research existed within the ongoing research existing projects.

I am a molecular biologist and strongly believe that the Bush policy drastically slowed down the ground breaking research and development that was going on at the time. The closest analogy I can draw would be if during the infancy of our space program, some politician came in during the Mercury program and said, "For the first time, we're going to fund engine development directly, but for personal reasons don't feel we should keep making bigger and better rocket engines. We will fund this research but you must work with the engines created 3 years ago and must stop all work on new development and models."

If there were any real advances to be made in embryonic stem cell research, the private sector would be all over it. All advances to date are from adult stem cells. Embryonic ones are too unpredictable and normally wind up causing massive amounts of tumors.

OP.

I felt sick myself when I read about Obama and his votes on infanticide.

Stay true to yourself. Pray and send love to all those little innocent aborted babies as well as their perpetrators for love is always felt.
The energy you send out to others whether you feel they are good or bad is always going to help the universe.

The karma that follows every ignorant or evil act just comes right back to you.

I do like how Stem cell helps others as long as there are regulation and they don't use murdered babies.

The blood that is released everytime a baby is aborted bring allot of negative astral beings to the world so you can imagine how many lower astral beings there are around.

You are entitled to your sadness but release it and focus on love and peace and you will create it all around you and it will spread to the world.
That's what they are afraid of. They are afraid, we the people will realize how really powerfull we are if we realize that loving can change the universe.
Namaste.

all advances to date are from adult stem cells because up until now that's all that could be used. re: the tumors, they'll have to develop a way to monitor the growth of stem cells, and to do that they have to be able to work with embryonic stem cells. they aren't just going to start pumping people full of embryonic stem cells from the get-go.

OP, you exemplify why religion should not factor into research or politics.

I'm sorry that you're upset but you have the option to use the technology or not use it and your "religion" will deal with you accordingly. What you should not have the right to do is to dictate someone else's choice!

Since I believe that life is about the spirit that energizes those cells I'm grateful that science is finding a way to help and heal. BTW, it may well be that stem cells from the placenta are the most powerful and it will violate no one's beliefs (well, maybe some fanatics who object to everything)

So please, I'm willing to respect your views as long as you don't ram them down my throat via attempted guilt trips, but please at least try to honour the views of others until God pops in Himself and makes it all clear.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 432008

That is patently false. Sadly, statements like these only illustrate how little some in the public actually know or understand of the biological research and development cycle.

The private sector has little motivation to privately fund massive research and development into non-therapeutic research. The reason? Non-therapeutic revenue streams are almost non existent. The first major breakthroughs in the field of stem cell research were conducted in academia and via govt funding for exactly this reason. There is too much risk involved and the barriers of entry too large for a single company to open up an entirely new field of research, conduct their own low level research and dev and then successfully (attempt to) take to market a therapeutic product. Particularly a publicly held company - there is no way shareholders would go for something with odds like that.

The advances you speak of in adult stem cells are precisely BECAUSE embryonic research had been LIMITED to the lines created back in the 90's. It would be like if the government arbitrarily limited new research in photovolteics - you would undoubtedly then see advancements in CSP instead. That would not mean that PV is inferior to CSP; it would only mean that the govt artificially limited further research in PV.

The private sector simply does not conduct a lot of non-therapeutic or theoretical research. The private sector is not making breakthroughs in Astronomy, Physics, etc for this reason.

Just because General Electric has not made major advances in nuclear fusion technology does not guarantee that a breakthrough in that area is not possible. Any major breakthrough in particle physics that leads to sustainable fusion power generation will almost certainly be made by govt funded research. Once that breakthrough is made and developed then the private sector can come in and find applications for it.

Remember this folks: all that scientists have been able to create with embryonic stem cells is cancer. All the progress to date has been made with non-embryonic stem cells.

Isaiah 35
Joy of the Redeemed
1 The desert and the parched land will be glad;
the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.
Like the crocus, 2 it will burst into bloom;
it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
the splendor of Carmel and Sharon;
they will see the glory of the LORD,
the splendor of our God.
3 Strengthen the feeble hands,
steady the knees that give way;

4 say to those with fearful hearts,
"Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come,
he will come with vengeance;
with divine retribution
he will come to save you."

5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened
and the ears of the deaf unstopped.

6 Then will the lame leap like a deer,
and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Water will gush forth in the wilderness
and streams in the desert.

7 The burning sand will become a pool,
the thirsty ground bubbling springs.
In the haunts where jackals once lay,
grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.

8 And a highway will be there;
it will be called the Way of Holiness.
The unclean will not journey on it;
it will be for those who walk in that Way;
wicked fools will not go about on it. [a]

9 No lion will be there,
nor will any ferocious beast get up on it;
they will not be found there.
But only the redeemed will walk there,

10 and the ransomed of the LORD will return.
They will enter Zion with singing;
everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them,
and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Did you ever understand that Revelation, the Beast System, and their antichrist leader are all about the creation attempting to ascend to the status of Creator? The drugs we get put on to "wipe away our tears and sorrows", etc. You are falling for the lie.

He didn't overturn Bush's policy, HE INCREASED IT. BUSH was the one who FIRST FUNDED ESCR, and he bragged about it in the 2004 election. Bush started, even GLEN BECK is famously known for pointing that out. IT IS BUSH's INITIATIVE; this is a BUSH legacy.

Re: I feel sick, Obama just overturned Bush policy on stem cells
Most of the ubber-religious types who object to the stem cell research will be among the first in line to use the benefits of it when it means saving their own ass or the lives of one of their own children.

I'm nearly 60 years old, and the effects of six decades on this planet are clearly manifesting themselves and more so with every day that passes. Yet I still have children to get thru college, a grandchild to raise, and a HELL OF A LOT of things I want to do on this earth. Some selfish, I'd have to admit and some have to do with the legacy I want to leave - with having a chance to really make a difference. I am seriously contemplating running for political office in my own home state (Arizona) because I'm sick and tired of a bunch of republican retired fucks who moved here with major bucks so they wouldn't have to shovel snow any longer being able to vote down every educational funding bill, every public works program, and even a water treatment plant because THEY don't want to pay a few dollars more of their precious millions in taxes.

Arizona has one of the lowest rankings in the nation in terms of public education. (I've sent my kids to private schools out of this state for that very reason - NOT because I enjoyed paying $30k per year for boarding schools.) I'm sick of unpaved roads, no public transit, a rail connection to the national rail system that ONLY stops in Flagstaff in Northern Arizona and doesn't even come into Phoenix! (If you want to take the train to LA, you begin your journey with a two and a half hour drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff where you can then catch the national rail system. But forget about using it to get you into or out of Phoenix or Tucson. The only other alternative is to take the BUS which is what Amtrak touts as their "connection". The reason for this asinine situation? The republicans in office at the time refused to fund a rail station being built in Downtown Phoenix!

Okay - you get the idea. I'm not ready to check out at 60 or 70 or even 80 if I'm in good health and mobile and can use the brain I was given. And that stem cell research may well help us avoid the typical problems we now call "aging" or most of them, anyway. I'm all for using whatever we have available to use. If an aborted fetal tissue can be used to grow out cells that cure brain cancer, or restore liver function or later even re-grow or regenerate a dying organ — so be it! I don't think that GOD as I understand him expects us to merely throw this valuable tissue into the incinerators and walk away from the potential help it could offer to humanity.

Those that choose to avoid the benefits of this research can choose to go silently into that long dark night of aging and death if they choose. As for me, I will choose to fight the process tooth and nail throwing everything science and technology can offer me at the problem until we either solve it or delay the onset of old age 'til I'm well in my 90's! (Or maybe 150's! - Who knows?)

The bible is hammered shit.

The god and jesus characters are just dreamed up make believe characters.

The bible's god character,

created by the flat earth bible writers,

was truly a dumb fuk god.

Here's why

Read this Genesis verse closely:

"b][16] God made the two great lights, the greater one to govern the day,

and the lesser one to govern the night;"

Any real god would obviously KNOW that the

"lesser light" was a

..............DEAD FUKING ROCK............................

What kind of doofus stumble bum goofy god would not know the difference between a

light

and a

dead rock????????

No REAL god could possibly be this stupid.

The flat earth bible writers were entirely ignorant of science

just like all of todays extremely dim witted christurds.
