Basic Anatomy Lesson on stem cells:
Stem cells have potential to become cells and/or tissue. The potential for becoming certain cells depends on their type. We have many different cells responsible for the make up of our body.

Embryonic stem cells are:
Totipotent cells: can become any type of cell.
Pluripotent: can become most, but not all types of cells. The only cells it is not capable of are those of the placenta, which is produced by the totipotent cells.
*These are found in the umbilical cord, hence why some moms are choosing to keep these.
Adult stem cells are:
Multipotent: can become several types of cells (found typically in adult tissue ie: cardiac, neural, and bone marrow stem cells.)
Unipotent: can become one specialized cell- have the ability to self renew, which is the major characteristic of a stem cell. Hence why stem cells are sought after.

Adults have multipotent cells which eventually turn into unipotent cells (which are found in our tissue, and can yeild a specific cell). For example, the epithelium (the outermost skin layer.) The problem with unipotent and multipotent is it is specific (cannot develop into multiple cells)and they are rare. The zygote/embryo consists of far more. The capability to produce totipotent or pluripotent in adults is not possible, naturally. Since the have already produced all the organs and tissues necessary for life, we have no use for them.

The idea is that they will use embryos left over from in vitro fertilization that would normally be destroyed (for now anyway), which are producing daughter calls (thus DNA). The cells can potentially become tissue, or anything else necessary, since they are totipotent (or multipotent). The hope is cancer- which is a mutation in DNA- will be cured. There are also a lot of other high hopes for stem cell research, such as cardiac tissue regeneration, etc.

MY PROBLEM lies with in vitro fertilization, and everything else that is playing God. It is not a good thing. Just like designer babies and everything else. We are not immortal. Manipulating life to extend our selfish, worthless existance is ridiculous. The only perfect beings are babies, they are the closest thing to God. And we are destroying them to save our pathetic lives.

Take anatomy, learn how the body works. It's an amazing machine. The most incredible thing in the universe. Yet, we try to improve upon perfection. A majority of illnesses have been created by our inability to deal with the fact that everyone dies. This world will turn into one of those movies where everyone has petri dish babies that are tested for their genetic potential. If they are not up to code, they will be destroyed and used to heal some 200 year old selfish person.

It's a downward spiral.
