Local banksters sticking it to their customers
During the past two years United Missouri Bank and Commerce Bank have been radically changing the way they process deposits, credits, and payments.

First it was UMB and the policy of pay the largest check first, regardless of what time of day it came in. For example, you have 5 checks or debits that have posted and you're overdrawn by .12, this initiates an overdraft fee. The bank then pays the largest amount first and bounces the rest, due to overdraft fees. At $35 a whack you just lost $140+/-, and must pay up before the payments hit the account again.

UMB's reason for the policy change is that to many people were complaining that their mortgages weren't getting paid. So now your mortgage gets paid but your lights, water, gas, and trash service all get shut off.

Second is Commerce Bank and their policy of counting pending payments that haven't posted yet to your account. In other words, forget running to the bank and making a deposit to cover your account. Not as complicated but just as effective.

What's next? The only thing missing at this point is if you write a check and date it today and run to the bank to cover it tomorrow, only to be charge an overdraft fee based on the date of the check, not when it posted.

Anyone else with stories about local banks changing policies to better their bottom line while the little guy suffers?

How is the bank responsible for your errors? How about not bouncing checks?

That's exactly the point. The bank is the one creating these errors. Most of the checks wouldn't bounce if the banks left their policies alone. Seems like deliberate manipulation to suck a few more dollars out of their customers.

Now take that violin and shove it up your ass.

Same thing was happening in Britain and now there's some sort of consumer action case about it. If the people win they'll get back a lot of the unfair charges.

Fair enough if you go overdrawn by a lot but some cases we're talking about 10 pence and then a charge of £35 plus interest on the overdrawn amount which isn't 10p, it's £35.10.

I wouldn't have a problem in the world paying an overdraft fee, even for multiple items... IF it were a reasonable charge. Let's say, $10 or $15.

But the idea that you overdraw your account by a dollar and pay $140 in fees should just be illegal.

By your logic, where we should be personally responsible and NEVER make a mistake, then it's okay if the bank just charges $100 per overdraft. After all, it's your fault for not managing your finances.

Keep defending the banks, dumbass.

I forgot to mention my own case:-

£5000 overdraft gradually being paid off from my monthly salary each month. When I lost the regular salary and became self-employed I sometimes paid my money in a day or two after the bank calculated it's fees and those fees are what pushed my account over the overdraft.

To cut a long story short this overdraft was looking like never being paid so I asked to change it to a loan - wouldn't do it cause my account had exceeded the overdraft too many times.

All in all I repaid the £5000 overdraft 3 times and still owed the same as I started with so I stopped paying. They kept adding charges and now I owe about £6500 and told them to take me to court. I tried everything to resolve this - a loan, begging them to stop the interest or excessive charges for 6 months, everything I could, but they just said no.

Remember I've already paid them back £15,000 for the the original £5000 and now they want another £6500.

one time i recall, for instance...

I used my debit card (back when i trusted the banks, so naively) to purchase a pack of cigarettes... Earlier, i had been at the bank for a meeting with one of the officials there - i was told by them that my account had a balance that could cover such purchase. My electronic report also claimed the same thing.

Both said i had 35 dollars and some odd cents.

I purchased one pack of cigarettes at $4.57. 35-4.57 = 31.43.

Apparently, the bank had messed up tho. I had only $4.24 in the account.

Therefore, i had a 33 cent overdraft... For which, i had to pay them 40 fucking dollars for THEIR mistake!

Bank fees used to be reasonable and it was never an issue until recently. Diligently watching my account on the banks website has led me to these discoveries. I didn't receive a memo from them stating the changes.

Gradually they will make it impossible to complete a transaction without being charged an enormous fee.

Banks have been doing that for years.

Nothing new.

Credit unions pay as they come thru.

Only during the past two years or so where I bank have the policies changed for the worst. At least they hadn't caught my attention before.
