Flint, Michigan: Home abandonment so bad they might shut down whole sections of city
"Property abandonment is getting so bad in Flint that some in government are talking about an extreme measure that was once unthinkable -- shutting down portions of the city, officially abandoning them and cutting off police and fire service.

Temporary Mayor Michael Brown made the off-the-cuff suggestion Friday in response to a question at a Rotary Club of Flint luncheon about the thousands of empty houses in Flint.

Brown said that as more people abandon homes, eating away at the city's tax base and creating more blight, the city might need to examine "shutting down quadrants of the city where we (wouldn't) provide services."

He did not define what that could mean -- bulldozing abandoned areas, simply leaving the vacant homes to rot or some other idea entirely."

Imagine what those abandoned sections will become. Havens for the worst criminals, who know the police are never going to show up there.

Re: Flint, Michigan: Home abandonment so bad they might shut down whole sections of city
Yeah flint's been the pits for a long time now. Even in the "booming" 90s, most people in flint were driving to other cities for work. When gas prices started to hit hard, they started moving to those other cities if they could. Many couldn't, they were living paycheck to paycheck as it was. The surrounding towns aren't much better off, either. Most of the jobs are minimum wage, simply because there are far too many available workers, and not enough spots.

Even more skilled positions are low paying, because so many people tried to get ahead by attending the local colleges, so it's not just the usual urban ghettos that are suffering, even people with 2 and 4 year degrees were finding it hard to keep a job...and that's before things started to get bad.

I can't imagine it now.

michael moores first film was about flint, it has been a shit hole for a long time:

if they are going to abandon parts of the city, they should level it and return it to natural habitat, other wise the gangs will just move in and take it over

They already are anyway! Flint is pretty bad! Runs "neck to neck" with the bad areas of Detroit (or, should I say the WORSE areas of Detroit, since all of Detroit needs to be walled up and shut down)

i agree, one hand on tool belt, other on shotgun

lets see, muskegon, benton harbor, flint, detroit, parts of grand rapids and kalamazoo are pretty sketchy, outside of those cities, michigan is in great shape, as far as friendly people go

Re: Flint, Michigan: Home abandonment so bad they might shut down whole sections of city
I've got some cold hard facts here that will piss people off, get them rabid to ban me for being cold and uncompassionate.

Take a look at the racial makeup of flint michigan here:

[link to www.city-data.com]

Can you tell me what commonality there is between all the cities that are turning into cesspools, and what we can do about it?

I know what we could do, legalize all drugs.. that would end the ghettos in the US overnight. Seems the government purposely encourages certain ethnic groups into being users in order to accomplish certain political objectives. Increased gun violence will allow them to clamp down on gun rights. This is just one example.

Rather then laying the blame where it lies, ON THE CRIMINALS, it allows them to do what they really planned all along, tighten control over the law abiding citizens.
