Steve: This isn't a review, this is a history lesson. The year is 1829. The Civil War is still 32 years away, Texas isn't a state yet (if only they had known then, they could've done something about that), in fact the US hadn't really expanded beyond the Mississippi. The Busch family is busy selling crap to German peasants back in Europe, still about 60 years away from selling crap to American peasants. 1829 is when this country was graced with our classic American lager, Yuengling. Now, it wasn't this specific type, but Traditional has become their flagship label. 174 years later, they've survived wars, depressions, disco, and Anheuser Busch raping the brewing countryside, and they've done it while brewing a quality beer. This doesn't cost that much more than Bud, and it has a crisp, smooth flavor and a nice maltiness to it. So why drink Bud when you can have this? Well, this is a regional brewery, so you're lucky to find it outside the East Coast. However, call your distributor and the brewery and insist they sell it, and maybe this country will find that we've been duped into believing that Bigger is Better (isn't that why we buy SUV's?). There are better beers, but this is a staple beer, one you should always keep on-hand. Give your money to a real American brewery, one that cares about quality. No, this isn't a paid advertisement, but dammit, I will take their money if they want to send it!!! (5/31/2003)

Love it. I've been to the brewery and took the tour. Cheapest of the better tasting beers. I get 12 bottles for $9.99.

Re: Yuengling Traditional Lager
any beer that uses corn grits or rice in place of the costlier (and better tasting) grains is garbage. doesn't mean it's undrinkable. it's sort of like substituting cherry kool-aid for cherry juice but with a worse hangover.

there are many hundreds of good beers available. try them, or, if they are too expensive for you, brew them yourself. home brewing is remarkably easy, and there are endless variations that don't include the cheapest grains money can buy.

they don't use cheap grains in place of hops. they use cheap grains in place of barley or wheat.
