Influential Los Angeles Times columnist Rosa Brooks has hung up her journalistic hat and joined the Obama administration, but not before penning a public proposal calling for some radical ideas to help bail out the failing news industry.

Brooks, who has taken up a post as an adviser at the Pentagon, advocated upping "direct government support for public media" and creating licenses to govern news operations.

"Years of foolish policies have left us with a choice: We can bail out journalism, using tax dollars and granting licenses in ways that encourage robust and independent reporting and commentary, or we can watch, wringing our hands, as more and more top journalists are laid off," she wrote in her parting column on April 9.

Brooks said this would help rescue the industry from a "death spiral" and left the government unaccountable to the journalists who must keep it honest. " can't imagine anything more dangerous than a society in which the news industry has more or less collapsed," she wrote.

But critics say her proposal would spell an end to the independent media and make journalists reliant lapdogs.

"The day that the government gets involved in the news media you see the end of the democratic process, because an independent news media is absolutely essential to the success of a democracy," said L. Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center, a conservative watchdog group.

Bozell said licensing journalists would violate American traditions and was a form of "intellectual prostitution."

"Since when did our Founding Fathers envision that ... you could exercise your right to freedom of speech provided you had a license from the federal government? This is the kind of stuff you have revolutions about," he told FOXNews.com.

Attempts to reach Brooks by phone and e-mail were unsuccessful. A columnist for four years at the Times, Brooks this week joined the office of the undersecretary of Defense for policy, the principal adviser to the Pentagon's top brass. She retains her post as a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center and during the Clinton administration served as a senior adviser to the State Department.

DaJ Note: Qualifications = nil.

Some in the government are already looking to assist the industry. Sen. Benjamin Cardin, D-Md., proposed legislation in March that would allow newspapers to operate as tax-exempt nonprofits as long as they don't endorse political candidates. The move was heralded as a positive step toward finding a fix but condemned by critics for potentially making newspapers beholden to the government.

Brooks is not the first journalist to support a broadsheet bailout, but she is the first member of the administration to publicly declare her support for the move, which appears to be gaining momentum. Complete story at posted link...

LOL - the asshole comment.... I don't mind numerous post on a good topic. I love to read the comments on each one- AND it just so happens that I have a tiny life in the real world and miss many threads ! just sayin ~

Peace

What I like about Daj and the posted threads ( which are almost always interesting and educational) is that if I ask an honest question, I get a non -attacking honest answer. Since, much of this is new and overwhelming for me- I can say that I appreciate being treated courteously.

Since I probably haven't said so before.. thank you Daj :)

First they get the people okay with the idea that requiring licenses to regulate the "air waves" is a great idea. Next they get the people to be okay with the idea that requiring licenses to regulate firearms (and other arms) is a great idea, then they get the public to accept that licensing news organizations is a great idea. All of these licensings are infringements upon what are otherwise not government granted priviledges but in reality god given rights endowed to ALL mankind individually. Such right are not to be infringed nor licensed, licensing is nothing more than a form of infringement.

It has become apparent that Churches and other religious organizations of other religions much have some form of operators license approved by the State and now there is this assault on the other part of the 1st amendment that of a free unrestricted uninfringed press.

The Ten amendments of the Bill of Rights are becoming ancient unaccplicable history.

Yes, Daj, the Bill of Rights being shredded. They don't need to shred the rest of the US Constitution, just the Bill of Rights, those first ten amendments to that Constitution. Once fully shredded the originally desired facsist state desired by many at that Constitutional Convention in the late 1780's will be in full force. With out the Bill of Rights, the US Constitution does little but empower a fully fascist government.

This isn't even big news really.

The 2008 election coverage clearly showed how the the MSM is already a bunch of lapdogs for Obama.

They even managed to convince many people Obama would literally take care of them.

Ok I am now convinced that there is going to be another American revolution and soon.

I mean I knew that the squeeze was on to bring the public to the point where they cry out and revolt, but this is on a fast track that I did not see coming so soon.

Keep in mind boys and girls they are causing the wincing and the fleecing of America, they want you to riot in the streets (look at all the legislation passed to keep America secure from with in and not from enemies without) so that they can get rid of those that want the freedom that there generations fought to provide them, and provide the solution to the ensuing chaos. Good people will be begging for the police state that they have waiting in the wings, they are fomenting the problems so as to have reasonable and ¨just cause¨ to implement the ¨solutions¨ they have all nicely ready to administer at the end of a gun barrel, taser and or any number of exotic weapons.

Capitalism means that insolvent, unpopular businesses FAIL.

If it doesn't make money, it FAILS.

Is your gov't going to bail out Joe's Pizzeria? Or Wendy's Window-washers?......

I can't imagine anything more dangerous than subsidized and licensed journalism.

The propaganda that the USA currently calls 'journalism' is a real blot on your international reputation.

She's way more than a bitch...

Rosa Brooks: the Pentagon’s far left adviser
By: Nile Gardiner at Apr 16, 2009

In what has to be one of the most extreme appointments yet by the Obama Administration, ex-Los Angeles Times columnist and Georgetown law professor Rosa Brooks has just been made an adviser to Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michelle Fluornoy - a move Brooks describes as "my personal government bailout."

Bailout is certainly the right word for someone who appears to have no relevant national security qualifications for the position. She does though have experience working as Special Counsel for George Soros's Open Society Institute in New York, and as a former adviser to Harold Koh, the hugely controversial nominee for Legal Adviser to the State Department.

Brooks' new boss Fluornoy holds one of the most powerful posts in the Pentagon, and is already playing a key role in shaping the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan as well as the wider war against al-Qaeda. She will also be a central figure in shaping U.S.-UK defence cooperation and Washington's policy towards NATO. As an adviser to Fluornoy, Brooks will wield an extraordinary degree of influence in helping shape U.S. policy. Her extreme views should therefore be closely scrutinized.

Brooks' description of the previous occupant of the White House as "our torturer in chief" is hard to square with President Obama's call for bipartisanship. Nor is her ludicrous comparison of the Bush Administration's legal arguments on the war on terror with Adolf Hitler's use of political propaganda.

She has also accused civilian White House and Pentagon officials from the last administration of being "eager to embrace the values normally exemplified by military juntas," while urging "military personnel to speak out, regardless of the cost, when they think our civilian leaders have gone beyond the pale" - little more than an open-ended call for the politicization of the armed forces.

Writing in the LA Times, Brooks has compared being a citizen in George W. Bush's America "to being a passenger in a car driven by a drunk driver," and compared the Bush Administration ("our local authoritarians") to the leaders of North Korea or Iran. Quite what Defense Secretary Robert Gates makes of all this hate-filled talk remains to be seen, especially as he is himself a former Bush official.

Brooks, a fierce opponent of the Iraq War, mocked the White House's "desperate flailing" and arguably belittled U.S. sacrifices in Iraq in a sarcastic 2006 piece she wrote at the height of attacks on Allied forces by al-Qaeda backed insurgents. She condescendingly noted in her article that "it's a good thing our troops have The Google over there - like Bush, they can use Google maps to recall how their hometowns look and wonder if they're going to make it back before this administration sends them on any more misconceived missions." She further argued that "with so many thousands dead, and so many thousands more embittered, 'winning' isn't really on the table anymore. The only question now is whether we can mitigate the damage."

Let's hope this is isn't the kind of advice the new administration takes on for the war in Afghanistan. In fact it is hard to think of a more inappropriate political appointment at a time when America needs a hard-headed approach to winning a global war instead of defeatist, far-left rhetoric. Scary to think of but not really surprising considering everything else our new "messiah" president has done.

On a side note: That description of her is about average of everyone else that works at the LA Times, and that is the reason the only thing most of us Californians use that paper for is to wipe our asses.

MSM v. III

Olden Days: Many independent news papers. People can learn about the world and how it operates.

Early 20th Century: CFR consolidates news media. People are limited to shadow-goverment controlled stories and information.

Late 20th Century: Internet is born. A tidal wave of unreported truth washes over the People. Mainstream controlled media (MSM) is rapidly abandoned.

Today: The Establishment, their grip on public awareness slipping and their media dying, scrambles desperately for a way to regain control over the minds of the public. Restructure the Internet to favor consolidated control? Require government licenses to practice journalism? "Fair and Balanced" laws? Impose McCain-Feingold on bloggers?

It remains to be seen what strategy the Establishment will finally implement to quash independent internet information (III).
