Coal is solidified atmospheric carbon dioxide. Here is proof:

Coal contains carbon. Really good coal is almost 100% carbon.
Coal is made of really old dead trees. Trees contain carbon. Trees get their carbon by sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. This shows that all the carbon in coal was sucked out of the atmosphere by the trees that turned into coal.
