Calorie Restriction without Hunger!
By Steven V. Joyal, MD, and Dale Kiefer

People today are missing out on a tremendous opportunity to achieve a radically extended healthy life span, along with significant reductions in body fat.

In a study just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the effects of caloric restriction were measured in a group of overweight adults over a six-month period.1 The findings were nothing short of astounding!

In response to reduced food intake, fasting insulin levels plummeted. As Researchers have known for decades, excess insulin functions as a death hormone that devastates virtually every cell and organ system in the body.

Insulin overload increases the risk of heart disease, cancer, blindness, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and other age-related diseases.2-6

Re: Every item recently recalled by FDA for salmonella has diabetic healing also prostate Big Pharma rids their competition
Here's some understanding holistic woman's aproach:

HOW TO REVERSE DIABETES:

Excerpt:
DIET SUPPLEMENTS: Omega FISH- OILS, GARLIC, Fo-Ti, MULTI-VITAMIN & HERB THERAPY including Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng) Schisandra, licorice, Sasparilla. Use freeze-dried ADRENALS and adrenal supporting herb mixtures, often sold as ADRENAL HERBS. EAT SUN CHOKES (Jerusalem Artichokes) in your salads, as they have insulinease which restores body's ability to manufacture insulin.) Put Fennel (finocchio) in your salads and soups, as it calms the pancreas. Use the trace Mineral Mineral CHROMIMUM piccolinate. Take Fenugreek leaves as tea or stewed with dinner. Use L-carnitine, L-Glutamine, freeze dried pancreas, buchu herb tea 2x a day, dandelion root tea, 2 goldenseal caps by mouth, uva ursi. Huckleberry helps with production of insulin. Use complex carbs in diet not refined. No niacin at all.

EXERCISE is excellent for diabetics as it disperses blood glucose reducing need for insulin. It also causes you to SWEAT and will flush uric acid from body thru skin, lungs and breath which helps kidneys. Exercise in sunlight. You will sweat. Go to steam room to also get rid of uric acids through skin.

THINGS YOUR DOCTOR NEVER TOLD YOU: 1. Anti-diabetic medications increase the risk of heart disease by 2 1/2 times. 2. Psychotropic drugs (that affect mental function) cause weight gain, 30 lbs per person, adding to likelihood of diabetes.

SIDEBAR:Hypoglycemia/diabetes is visible in the palm of the hand thru red dots on main lines of palm. They look like pin pricks or red sand granules in lines.

*Most of this is obtained from "Reversing Diabetes" by Dr. Julian Whitaker M.D.. Material on phytic acid from "Complete Food Handbook " by Doyle/Redding.

The prostate drug competition was the reason for pulling the jalepenos. See here:

In a recent study prostate cancer tumors in mice that were fed capsaicin--the compound in chili peppers that gives them their heat--were one fifth the size of untreated tumors, and capsaicin is also credited with killing 80 percent of human prostate cancer cells growing in mice. Sources: jalapenos, habaneros and other hot peppers.

Lower blood sugar

People with Type 2 diabetes who took 1 gram of fenugreek seed extract for two months reduced their blood sugar levels by about 20 percent, according to a small study in India. Fenugreek is safe for most people but don’t take it if you’re on blood thinners.

Re: Every item recently recalled by FDA for salmonella has diabetic healing also prostate Big Pharma rids their competition
Blood Glucose In a Nutshell:

This is a alternative medicine list which contains all natural herbs for effective support in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. Daily control of blood sugar levels is important for those with diabetes. Diabetes is a condition related to the release of insulin into the blood stream. Insulin controls the amount of glucose in the blood and the rate which glucose is metabolized. Your cells need glucose to produce energy. The primary active herbs in controling blood sugar levels include Bitter Melon, Cinnamon, Glucomannan, and Gymnema all of which provide naturally-occurring vitamins & minerals that support proper sugar & carbohydrate metabolism in the pancreas. If the pancreas does not properly use sugar, a diabetes related illness may occur.
These products are not recommended if you are pregnant. Anyone with low blood sugar problems should not use this list because hypoglycemia may result. Furthermore, diabetics taking hypoglycemic drugs (such as Chlorpropamide®, Glyburide®, or Phenformin®) or insulin should consult a qualified health care professional before using these products.

Herbs that help in controling blood sugar levels

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)
BILBERRY is the world's most famous herb for supporting healthy vision. World War II fighter pilots are said to have been given Bilberry jam prior to flying in low-light conditions. A natural pigment in Bilberry contains potent, eye-friendly antioxidants called anthocyanidins. They protect delicate eye tissues while other nutrients nourish the parts of your eye necessary for clear vision & light adjustment.

Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia)
BITTER MELON grows in tropical areas, including parts of East Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and South America, where it is used as a food as well as a medicine. The leaves and fruit have both been used to make teas and beer, or to season soups in the Western world. Bitter Melon is being studied in the support treatment of diabetes and psoriasis. Preliminary trials have shown that bitter melon may improve blood-sugar control for type-2 diabetics.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)
CINNAMON is considered a useful carminative for the removal of gastrointestinal gas. This herb is an effective digestive aid, and has also been used in folk remedies as a styptic for conditions such as uterine hemorrhage. Recent reports by the U.S.D.A. have determined that consuming as little as one-half teaspoon of Cinnamon each day may reduce blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels by as much as 20% in Type II diabetes patients who are not taking insulin. Most people are familiar with the sweet but pungent taste of the oil, powder, or sticks of bark from the Cinnamon tree. Cinnamon trees grow in a number of tropical areas, including parts of India, China, Madagascar, Brazil, and the Caribbean.

Citrus Bioflavonoids and Quercetin are vital in their ability to increase the strength of the capillaries (blood vessels) and to regulate their permeability. They assist Vitamin C in keeping collagen, the intercellular "cement" in healthy condition; are essential for the proper absorption and use of Vitamin C; prevents Vitamin C from being destroyed in the body by oxidation; beneficial in hypertension; helps hemorrhages and ruptures in the capillaries and connective tissues and builds a protective barrier against infections. Quercetin is a very highly concentrated form of Bioflavonoids derived from citrus fruit.

Fenugreek Seed (Trigonella foenum-graecum)
FENUGREEK SEED, according to European research, may be a good agent for reducing serum cholesterol. And, like Pectin, Fenugreek seeds may be an important remedy for diabetes. Fenugreek seeds contain a certain portion of mucilaginous fiber with high viscosity. The herb affects cholesterol levels in the same fashion as Pectin. Fenugreek also contains saponins. The saponin-containing plant fibers could inhibit the intestinal absorption of cholesterol much the same as Alfalfa saponins do (i.e. by absorbing bile acids, and increasing the loss of bile acids by fecal excretion, which then leads to an increased conversion of cholesterol into bile acid by the liver).

American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolium)
Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)
GINSENG is the ultimate example of man's almost mystical interaction with nature. Ginseng plays the central role in a good deal of Chinese mythology, medicine, commerce and trade. For Western man, the economic value of Ginseng outweighed its medicinal value until the past 15 years or so, during which time extensive research on the plant has grown explosively, and has tended to verify and extend the various medicinal claims. Ginseng has been found to protect the body & nervous system from stress, stimulate & increase metabolic function, increase physical & mental efficiency, lower blood pressure & glucose levels when they are high, and raise them (blood pressure & glucose levels) when they are low, increase gastrointestinal movement & tone, increase iron metabolism, and cause changes in nucleic acid (RNA) biosynthesis. Ginseng has also been found to stimulate the central nervous system in small amounts, and depress the central nervous system in large doses.

Glucomannan (Amorphophallus konjac)
GLUCOMANNAN is an all-natural, dietary source of 100% fiber obtained from the root of the Konjac plant in Asia. And Glucomannan contains zero calories. It's an excellent addition to a sensible weight loss program. Additionally, this herb has been shown to help reduce cholesterol, relieve constipation, and regulate blood sugar in several clinical studies. Glucomannan delays digestion, which results in a reduction of dietary sugar absorption, thereby reducing high blood-sugar levels that occur after eating a meal.

Goldenseal Root (Hydrastis cadensis)
GOLDENSEAL, a member of the family Ranunculaceae, is a native American medicinal drug introduced to early settlers by Cherokee Indians who used it as a wash for skin diseases and sore eyes. Goldenseal extract, derived from the rhizome and roots of this small forest plant, has acquired a considerable reputation as a general bitter tonic and as a remedy for various gastric and genitourinary disorders. Goldenseal's benefits can be attributed to its alkaloids, especially hydrastine and berberine. The latter is also responsible for the drug's characteristic golden color. These alkaloids are strongly astringent and help reduce inflammation of mucous membranes. Hydrastine has also been reported to lower blood pressure and stimulate peristalsis, along with being an anti-tussive (relieves coughs). Barberine and its sulfate, berberine sulfate, have been demonstrated to have anti-cancer activity in vitro, and also have been shown to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and immuno-stimulatory activity, as well. Barbering has shown marked effects on acute diarrhea and its antibacterial qualities interfere with the ability of micro-organisms to adhere to the walls of host cells. Goldenseal has been recommended for a variety of inflamed mucous membranes, including stomach, intestinal, vaginal and rectal. It has been reported that the plant relieves pains and helps heal wounds and stop bleeding. In addition, the antibacterial action helps reduce or prevent infection of open sores.

Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre)
Indian physicians first used GYMNEMA to treat diabetes almost 2,000 years ago. In the 1920s, preliminary scientific studies found some evidence that Gymnema leaves can reduce blood sugar levels, but nothing much came of this observation for decades. Today, Gymnema has become increasingly popular in the United States as a supportive treatment for diabetes.

Holy Basil (Ocimum basilicum)
HOLY BASIL has a rich and fanciful history. It had been considered "royale" to the French, a sign of love to the Italians, and a sacred herb in India. This plant is an important Ayurvedic herb, and is grown near Indian houses - it is believed to purify air by discharging negative ions. The plant is also believed to possess spiritual powers. It is one of the two most sacred plants in India.

Jerusalem Artichoke (Cynara scolymus)
The flower head of the JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE is used as a common food. The Artichoke head, root, and leaves contain several active components recognized as important for digestion and for proper liver, kidney, and gall bladder function. The phytochemicals in Artichoke have been well documented and the leaves, rather than the flower, have been found to be higher in medicinal value.

Mistletoe (Viscum album)
Over many centuries, reverence for this herb was translated into the Christian ritual of hanging MISTLETOE over doorways at Christmas. With each kiss, a berry was removed, and when they were gone, the Mistletoe was said to have lost its powers. Today, Mistletoe is used medicinally for headaches, dizziness, energy loss, irritability, vertigo, and other symptoms connected with raised blood pressure.

Olive Leaf (Olea europaea)
OLIVE LEAF has, for centuries, been recognized by people everywhere as an international symbol of peace; but what most people haven't recognized are the amazing benefits of the olive tree in maintaining a healthy immune system. Over a hundred years ago, teas made from the leaf of the Olive tree were used to maintain health in a variety of ways. But with the advent of modern synthetic drugs, knowledge of the tree's benefits was forgotten and almost lost. It was not revived until the 1970's when Upjohn Company, a pharmaceutical firm, rediscovered its benefits and initiated an extensive research program to isolate and synthesize the active principles. Scientists at Upjohn soon realized that the important constituent of the tree was a compound called oleuropein, which is metabolized in the body into a compound called calcium elenolate. Their research showed that calcium elenolate possessed amazing potential as a new drug in the fight against infectious diseases.

Psyllium (Plantago ovata)
Many leading cereal manufacturers have discovered what herbalists have known for decades - ground-up seeds from the PSYLLIUM plant are one of the highest sources of dietary fiber to be found in any food. For centuries, Psyllium has been used to treat ulcers, colitis, and constipation. We now know that it also helps clear the body of excess cholesterol. This herb is now touted as a preventive against heart disease. It may also raise the level of beneficial HDLs, the so-called "good" cholesterol, in the blood. Psyllium is an excellent laxative that offers relief from hemorrhoid and gastrointestinal irritations.

Suma Root (Pfaffia paniculata)
SUMA, also called Para toda, is the dried root of Pfaffia paniculata, a plant found in the Atlantic rain forest of Brazil. First introduced to the United States as Brazilian Ginseng, Suma is one of the most highly regarded herbs in South America, and is considered to be a true adaptogen. Used by native peoples for centuries, Suma is advocated as an effective adaptogen to support the immune system, adapt the body to external stresses, relieve pain, fight chronic fatigue syndrome, and accelerate wound healing. Herbalists using Suma often refer to research conducted by Dr. Milton Brazzach, head of the pharmaceutical department at the University of Sao Paulo. Researchers have isolated several active compounds in Suma, including Beta Ecdysterone, a plant sterol which has an anabolic and immune boosting effect in the body. Suma is also rich in a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals (particularly the rare mineral germanium), amino acids, allantoin (a cell building compound) and 6 pfaffic acids.

Uva Ursi (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)
UVA URSI is also referred to as Bearberry, Mountain Cranberry and Mealberry. The leaves of this small shrub have been used as an herbal folk medicine for centuries as a mild diuretic and astringent, and in the treatment of urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis and nephritis. Uva-Ursi contains a plant glycoside, Arbutin, which breaks down in the body to form hydroquinone, a chemical compound that serves as an effective urinary antiseptic and astringent. Uva-Ursi contains other compounds, among them ursolic acid, which are also known to be effective diuretics.

Pepper component hot enough to trigger suicide in prostate cancer cells
Capsaicin, the stuff that turns up the heat in jalapeños, not only causes the tongue to burn, it also drives prostate cancer cells to kill themselves, according to studies published in the March 15 issue of Cancer Research.

According to a team of researchers from the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in collaboration with colleagues from UCLA, the pepper component caused human prostate cancer cells to undergo programmed cell death or apoptosis.

Capsaicin induced approximately 80 percent of prostate cancer cells growing in mice to follow the molecular pathways leading to apoptosis. Prostate cancer tumors treated with capsaicin were about one-fifth the size of tumors in non-treated mice.

"Capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture," said Sören Lehmann, M.D., Ph.D., visiting scientist at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the UCLA School of Medicine. "It also dramatically slowed the development of prostate tumors formed by those human cell lines grown in mouse models."

Lehmann estimated that the dose of pepper extract fed orally to the mice was equivalent to giving 400 milligrams of capsaicin three times a week to a 200 pound man, roughly equivalent to between three and eight fresh habañera peppers – depending on the pepper's capsaicin content. Habañeras are the highest rated pepper for capsaicin content according to the Scoville heat index. Habañero peppers, which are native to the Yucatan, typically contain up to 300,000 Scoville units. The more popular Jalapeño variety from Oaxaca, Mexico, and the southwest United States, contains 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units.

As described in their study, the scientists observed that capsaicin inhibited the activity of NF-kappa Beta, a molecular mechanism that participates in the pathways leading to apoptosis in many cell types.

Apoptosis is a normal cellular event in many tissues that maintains a balance between newer replacement cells and aged or worn cells. In contrast, cancer cells seek to be immortal and often dodge apoptosis by mutating or deregulating the genes that participate in programmed cell death.

"When we noticed that capsaicin affected NF-kappa Beta, that was an indication that we might expect some of the apoptotic proteins to be affected," said the study's senior author, Phillip Koeffler, M.D., director of Hematology and Oncology, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and professor at UCLA.

The pepper extract also curbed the growth of prostate cancer cells through regulation of androgen receptors, the steroid activated proteins that control expression of specific growth relating genes.

In prostate cancer cells whose growth is dependent on testosterone, the predominant male sex steroid, capsaicin reduced cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Increased concentrations of capsaicin caused more prostate cancer cells to freeze in a non-proliferative state, called G0/G1.

Prostate cancer cells that are androgen independent reacted to capsaicin in a similar manner. Capsaicin reduced the amount of androgen receptor that the tumor cells produced, but did not interfere with normal movement of androgen receptor into the nucleus of the cancer cells where the steroid receptor acts to regulate androgen target genes such as prostate specific antigen (PSA). Capsaicin also interfered with the action of androgen receptors even in cells that were modified to produce excess numbers of androgen receptors.

The hot pepper component also reduced cancer cell production of PSA, a protein that often is produced in high quantities by prostate tumors and can signal the presence of prostate cancer in men. PSA content in the blood of men is used as a diagnostic prostate cancer screening measure. PSA is regulated by androgens, and capsaicin limited androgen-induced increases of PSA in the cancer cell lines.

More men in the United States develop prostate cancer than any other type of malignancy. Every year, more than 232,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in the U.S., and more than 680,000 develop the disease worldwide. Approximately 30,000 men die from prostate cancer in the U.S. each year, which is about 13 percent of all new cases. Worldwide, there are 221,000 deaths – approximately 31 per cent – among men with prostate cancer.

Lehman conducted the studies in Koeffler's laboratory in collaboration with UCLA cancer researchers Akio Mori, James O'Kelly, Takishi Kumagai, Julian Desmond, Milena Pervan, and William McBride. Mosahiro Kizaki, a former post-doctoral fellow in Koeffler's laboratory who initiated the capsaicin studies, is currently at the Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan.

Hydroxycitric Acid (Hydroxycut):

Hydroxycitric acid is an ingredient in the fruit rind of Garcinia cambogia, a tree native to Southeast Asia.

In Asia, people have used Garcinia for centuries as a food preservative and flavoring in curries and other dishes. It has a reputation for making foods feel more filling. It's also believed to be a "carminative," meaning it helps you pass gas after eating.

Experiments in the 1970s showed that adding large amounts of hydroxycitric acid (HCA) to the diets of mice caused them to eat less. It wasn't long before American supplement manufacturers began to mass-produce HCA as a weight loss product.

Weight loss supplements containing HCA include Hydroxycut, CitriMax, Super CitriMax, Citrin, and Super Garcinia.
How Does Hydroxycitric Acid Work?

Hydroxycitric acid acts on a crucial step in carbohydrate and fat metabolism. We'll spare you the chemistry lesson, but these are the high points:

Extra carbs in our diets get turned into fat. One main enzyme turns carbs into fatty acids. The fatty acids then get bundled together to make fat.

Citrate, a natural chemical in our bodies, slows down the enzyme that makes fatty acids out of carbs. And hydroxycitric acid is chemically almost identical to citrate. In fact, HCA slows down the fat-making enzyme even more than natural citrate does.

HCA also stimulates the liver to release glucose (sugar) into the blood. These higher sugar levels may cause the suppressed appetite seen in the mice studies.

Sounds simple enough: Take a product containing HCA, eat less, make less fat?

Not so fast. These metabolic processes are extremely complex. Experts debate how HCA works in mice. They downright disagree on whether HCA works at all to stimulate weight loss in people.
Is Hydroxycitric Acid Safe?

At the doses found in Hydroxycut and similar weight loss products, hydroxycitric acid appears to be nontoxic and safe.

In the numerous studies on hydroxycitric acid, it caused no significant ill effects. People taking HCA had no more side effects than those taking a placebo.

HCA is chemically very similar to natural citrate, known to be safe. In toxicity tests, mice fed amounts of HCA far higher than maximum human doses suffered no harm.

At one time, Hydroxycut and other weight loss supplements contained the herb ephedra, a natural stimulant. The FDA banned ephedra after the herb was linked to deaths and heart problems. No diet supplement contains ephedra today.
Research and Expert Opinions on Hydroxycitric Acid

So, does HCA work or not?

There's no question that hydroxycitric acid works to suppress appetite and induce weight loss -- in mice. [link to www.webmd.com]

I think hydroxycut was just banned for causing liver damage.
There can be too much of a good thing. I think eating things as food is much healthier than taking them as supplements. In a food, the beneficial ingredients are not in concentrated form, and they balance each other out.

I doubt there was no actual mass liver damage from the product. If the product did however have some minor malfunction as could be possible.

The active ingredient is still available as
"hydroxycitric acid" from the "Garcinia cambogia" fruit. That's all natural from a tree.

Tomato Sauces, Rich in Lycopene,
May Reduce Risk of Prostate Cancer

Diets rich in tomato sauces appear to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, according to a Harvard Medical School study. The most likely reason appears to be tomatoes' high content of lycopene, a red carotenoid related to beta-carotene.

In an ongoing study, Edward Giovannucci, MD, examined the dietary habits and health of 47,894 male health care professionals. Between 1986 and 1992, 812 of the men were diagnosed with prostate cancer. When Giovannucci analyzed 46 vegetables and fruits in the men's diets, he found four foods associated with a low risk of developing prostate cancer: tomato sauce (on spaghetti), pizza (with tomato sauce), tomatoes, and strawberries.

The men who ate the most of these foods were least likely to develop prostate cancer. Those who ate few tomato foods had the highest risk, according to Giovannucci's article in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (Dec 6, 1995;87:1767-76).

Despite their red color, strawberries do not contain lycopene. Their inverse relationship to prostate may have been due to a statistical fluke or to some other nutritional component (such as a flavonoid).

Re: Every item recently recalled by FDA for salmonella has diabetic healing also prostate Big Pharma rids their competition
Prostate Cancer: The Role of ... Health Article

What Is Lycopene, and What Foods Contain It?

Lycopene is a carotenoid, a plant substance that gives fruits and vegetables a range of colors -- from yellow to bright red. It’s found in tomatoes, dried apricots, pink grapefruit, guava, watermelon, and papaya.

Lycopene is also an antioxidant. Antioxidants are natural cancer-fighting agents found in fruits, vegetables, tea, and soy. Scientists believe antioxidants fight cancer with their ability to combat free radicals. The body normally makes free radicals, which help fight off infections and viruses. But too many of these highly charged little bundles may damage the DNA in cells, which can lead to the growth of cancer cells.
What’s the Connection With Prostate Cancer?

Scientists think lycopene may act as a powerful antioxidant and control the spread of tumor cells in the prostate. Elizabeth Johnson, PhD, is a scientist at the Jean Mayer USDA Nutrition Research Center on Aging in Boston who studies carotenoids and disease. She says, “Of all the carotenoids, or plant pigments, lycopene has the strongest antioxidant activity.”

But these theories have yet to be proven. Jin-Rong Zhou, PhD, from Harvard Medical School and the director of the Nutrition Metabolism Laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston , explains, “Lycopene was originally linked with prostate cancer from population studies. These showed that men who ate more tomatoes and tomato products, such as spaghetti sauce, had lower rates of prostate cancer. Researchers believed lycopene in the tomatoes was the important ingredient. Yet there is no direct evidence of how lycopene works in the prostate tissue. The antioxidant benefit is one idea but not clearly proven.”
Tomato Sauce and Tomatoes: Not Created Equal

Johnson says that tomatoes are by far the best sources of lycopene. But certain things affect how much is absorbed in the body.

“Contrary to the popular belief that fresh is always better, when it comes to lycopene, fresh is not better,” says Johnson. One factor that helps absorption is how much the tomato is processed -- meaning if it is diced and cooked.

Johnson explains, “Lycopene in food is bound up in the cell walls of the plant. Chopping and heating help break up that plant structure, so lycopene is released and better absorbed.”

Fat also affects lycopene. “Lycopene is fat-soluble, meaning it needs some fat to be absorbed in the gut,” says Johnson. So tomato sauce or well-cooked, diced tomatoes with a little oil yield more lycopene than fresh, plain tomatoes.
Why Not Just Pizza?

A few years ago, research from the Harvard University School of Public Health found that pizza, with its lycopene-rich tomato sauce, was linked to a reduced risk for prostate cancer. But if you think this gives you license to eat super-supreme pizzas, think again.

Pizza was also associated with unhealthy lifestyle practices.

Zhou says, “In general, pizza is not considered a healthful food because it’s high in saturated fat and usually lacking in vegetables. The tomato sauce or tomatoes on the pizza was more likely the benefit here -- not the pizza itself.”
So, What Should You Eat?

Despite lycopene needing more study, Zhou believes adding tomato products to your diet is a good idea. “But people shouldn’t expect to add some tomato products to an unhealthful diet and think the problem is solved. Instead, the focus should be to eat a healthful diet abundant in various fruits and vegetables that includes tomatoes and tomato products.”

Johnson adds, “To advocate one food or group of foods is all right, but you don’t want to go overboard. As humans, we’re not just concerned with cancer. We’re also concerned with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, etc. The focus should be on a whole diet that helps prevent many diseases.

“Fortunately, it’s pretty much the same message for all these diseases -- eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in fat that includes a variety of foods,” she says.

Zhou agrees. “Lycopene is just one factor of many. It likely interacts with other plant chemicals in the tomato and other fruits and vegetables to help fight disease. So the whole dietary pattern is important.”
What About Supplements?

Lycopene supplements pack high doses of the carotenoid into pills. Sometimes these amounts are far more than can be eaten in a typical diet.

Johnson believes that lycopene supplements are counterproductive. “All of the carotenoids, including lycopene, have very similar structures that may rival each other to be absorbed. So if you overdo it with one carotenoid, you could lose the benefit of another. Different carotenoids may lower the risk for different cancers, so you may miss out on those advantages.”

Johnson adds, “Lycopene supplements are expensive. And there’s no guarantee they are absorbed well. Compare a bottle of tomato juice with a bottle of lycopene supplements -- the juice is a lot cheaper, you’re taking in a realistic amount of lycopene, and you get the benefit of other nutrients in the juice.”

A Lycopene-Rich Recipe
Italian Vegetable Pasta

1/2 lb. pasta of your choice

1/2 cup onion, finely chopped

1 Tbs. olive oil

1-2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

28 oz. can whole tomatoes packed in puree (or use 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. fresh tomatoes, chopped)

2 cups broccoli, chopped

15 oz. can of kidney beans drained and rinsed.

1/2-3/4 tsp. sugar (to taste)

1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper

8 pitted black olives, sliced

2 tsp. dried basil

2 Tbs. Parmesan cheese preferably fresh grated

Prepare pasta according to package directions. Meanwhile, heat oil in large skillet or Dutch oven and add onion. Cook over medium-high about 5 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent browning. Add chopped garlic, cook about 1 minute.

Add tomatoes, chopping them as you add to pan; or add puree from can. Add broccoli, drained kidney beans, sugar and crushed red pepper. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer about 15 minutes to blend flavors.

Just before serving, stir in olives, basil and Parmesan. Serve over pasta. Serves 4, with 420 calories and 6 grams fat per serving. Preparation time: 7 - 10 minutes. Cooking time: 25 minutes

Steaming those carrots a little bit and add a little bit of oil in there, you'll get much more absorption of the beneficial carotenoids. The same is true for tomatoes. By overcooking tomatoes, for example, by simmering a tomato sauce for hours, you’ll begin to break down the lycopene. Everything in moderation please!

fish oil diabetesFish oil may benefit people with diabetes, study finds

(HealthCastle.com) Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway studied the effect of fish oil supplements on blood lipoprotein in 26 people with Type 2 diabetes. The study participants were assigned to take either fish oil or corn oil supplements. Size and concentration of lipoproteins subclasses (several blood cholesterol markers) as well as insulin sensitivity were measured after nine weeks of supplementation. High doses of fish oil reduced the size and concentration of several lipoprotein subclasses while lowering insulin sensitivity. Results of this study were published online on the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition website on Feb. 28, 2007.
fish oil diabetesEditor's Note - Multiple Benefits of Fish Oil and Omega 3

Benefits of fish oil and omega 3 fatty acids are well known for their role in heart disease prevention. The American Heart Association advises heart disease sufferers and people with high triglyceride levels to take fish oil supplements. Recent studies suggest that fish oil may prevent dementia and ease depression. Clinical studies regarding the effects of fish oil on diabetes are still preliminary, however.

How much Fish Oil? For heart health benefits, experts suggested to aim for 250 milligrams as EPA/DHA from fish source a day. One three ounce serving of fatty fish, such as salmon or mackerel, provides more than 1000 milligrams alone. For people with documented heart disease or high levels of triglycerides, the American Heart Association suggests 1,000 milligrams per day and 2,000 to 4,000 milligrams per day, respectively. Controlling Blood Sugar with Cinnamon and Coffee Berry By Dave Tuttle

Even people who pay careful attention to what they eat may see their blood sugar levels increase as they get older. Likewise, aging is associated with a potentially hazardous decline in insulin sensitivity. The regrettable outcome is that an ever-growing number of adults are diabetic or pre-diabetic, with glucose levels that are slowly but surely rising above the desired threshold of 100 mg/dL.
