If you already know about something from 21st century physics called "brane theory", this will be easier to understand.

Basically, picture your universe as being on a sheet. It has length and width, but no height. Now picture other universes on their own sheets. Stack up all the sheets, and now you have a pile of sheets. The pile has length, width, and now height. By stacking up the sheets you introduced a third dimension, height, which is perpendicular to the sheets. The sheets could be indexed by their location in that third dimension (like a page number). And to get from one sheet to another you would have to travel in that third dimension.

Now in real life each universe has ten dimensions. But they are located in this bulk space that has one additional dimension perpendicular to the ten. The universes are located in bulk space, separated by various expanses of bulk space, and they themselves are permeated by bulk space.

One of the things that are located in bulk space is an antipsychon "fluid". The Shadow beings are composed of antipsychons.
