HOW DID THE FIRST WAVE FROM THE 1918 FLU COMPARE ?
Does anyone know how the first wave of the 1918 Spanish Flu compared to this first wave of the currenct epidemic.

I know that the first wave of the Spanish Flu was mild compared to the second wave... but how mild?

Did 100,000 die from the first wave or was it less than a thousand?

Just like to know whether or not the severity is similar to what we're seeing now.

Re: HOW DID THE FIRST WAVE FROM THE 1918 FLU COMPARE ?
The origins of this influenza variant is not precisely known. It is thought to have originated in China in a rare genetic shift of the influenza virus. The recombination of its surface proteins created a virus novel to almost everyone and a loss of herd immunity. Recently the virus has been reconstructed from the tissue of a dead soldier and is now being genetically characterized.

The name of Spanish Flu came from the early affliction and large mortalities in Spain (BMJ,10/19/1918)
where it allegedly killed 8 million in May (BMJ, 7/13/1918).

However, a first wave of influenza appeared early in the spring of 1918 in Kansas and in military camps throughout the US. Few noticed the epidemic in the midst of the war.

Wilson had just given his 14 point address. There was virtually no response or acknowledgment to the epidemics in March and April in the military camps. It was unfortunate that no steps were taken to prepare for the usual recrudescence of the virulent influenza strain in the winter.

The lack of action was later criticized when the epidemic could not be ignored in the winter of 1918 (BMJ, 1918).

These first epidemics at training camps were a sign of what was coming in greater magnitude in the fall and winter of 1918 to the entire world.

Thanks for the info...

I found it interesting from that link that virus was much more devastating in certain regions than others. It was determined that the humidity of the climate was linked with more severe epidemics.

Regular influenza transmits best at 40F

The cooler temperatures "preserve" it allowing it to survive longer outside a host , but freezing temperatures will kill it

Thats why we have a "Flu Season" in the first place

People get the flu year round , but you dont see large scale infections until it cools down.

The "Second Wave" is actually the "First Wave" hitting its stride once temperatures drop.

If this virus doesn't die out before October ...Asia will get SLAMMED.

North America and Europe will have a flu season that hospitalizes more people than usual(maybe even fewer than usual deaths since people will be scared and more likely to go to the hospital sooner) , but undeveloped areas of Asia will see massive death totals.

This whole thing is just fear mongering by the UN to draw attention away from its recent embarrassment ....The "Anti-racism" summit that declared that the way to end racism was to exterminate all Jews.

The time to get worried is if people are still getting sick from this in August...until then its just hysteria.

Winter is the strange season.

The winter of 2009 is mostly behind us now.

THE SECOND COMING OF WINTER 2009
begins with the winter soltice and ends with the new year.

Per the TToD, this is a period of time known as T-3 months before the seven significant days that conclude with the MOST signifcant day of April 6th.

T-3 will mark the emergence of
the THIRD DEGREE OF DOOM immediaty following Dove38 the SECOND COMING OF WINTER 2009.
