So many of our problems boil down to just not being in contact with others around us. Oddly, people will spend hours on the internet chatting...and never talk to their neighbors. Quoting: falldownIt's a strange, strange world... I know! It is really amazing. I am aquainted with a lot of my neighbors, partly because I walk my dog every day, and partly because I do wave and smile at them. Then we talk or the consider me approachable and let me know if there is some kind of problem. When I lived in a rural area where the nearest neighbor was 1/4 mile away I knew everyone on my street and most on the next few streets down the mountain. We would have huge barbques and people would come from all over. Now, in an apartment, where everyone is on top of each other no one knows anyone. |

I have never experienced that and I have been friendly to strangers since the first time my friend and I stood on a street corner as children and waved at the cars going by at 5:00. We noticed their demeanor before they saw us, and the change of expression when they saw us. Most waved back with a new smile. Maybe it is your demeanor, your outward expression of your fears and angers that causes people to be concerned when they see you. It matters to you whether you are happy or not doesn't it? I know some 'jedi mind tricks' that I could teach you if you are interested. |

I'm twisted my neighbors arms just to make sure at least one of us goes to the township meetings and reports back. Most of the time, a few of us go, make a night of it, stop at a local restaurant, hang out with others after the meetings, etc. Similar deal with school board meetings and other things. Plus, I run 2.5 miles twice a day, so I know many of my neighbors pretty well, and one of my neighbors throws these huge parties a couple times a year. Of course, it's more rural, although not mayberry by any means, so that helps. Then, as you said, I'll go visit friends in the city, and they live stacked on other people, and they might know a couple other people in their building. Maybe. ~ ~ "He who does not understand your silence will probably not understand your words." ~Elbert Hubbard |

Quoting: SombraOkay. Let me concider. My wife was nice to my neighbor once. He came over at 1am in the morning drunk thinking my wife wanted to sleep with him. The crossing guard. The woman who flipped me off when I stopped to point out she dropped a bag in the road. The mailman. Has on earphones for his iPhone and I have to run him down to get him to notice me. A stranger. In this neighborhood, any sign of weakness could get you killed. I have concidered your request. Catch something that takes twenty years to kill you and has you screaming for mercy in the first five seconds. If you see something, say nothing, and drink to forget. Welcome to Night Vale. |
