OP I applaud your interest in Freemasonry. Be carefull most of the info on the internet is wrong. Lies and hundreds of years of myth that the ill informed have embraced as fact.

Tell your husband that his Grandfather did not speak of it for this reason. Most older Freemasons rather than risk violating their obligation to their brothers did speak of it period! The Masons of today are comfortable to awnser general questions about the fraternity with out breaking their obligation. One misconception about Freemasonry is that you have to be invited. You must ask for a petition from a friend. The Fremmasons are forbiden by their obligation to openly solicit membership.

The fact that your husband's Grandfather was a Freemason has no bearing on your family today.

A good reference for someone outside the Fraternity is "Freemasons for Dummies". A friend loaned me a copy and I found everything to be consistent with my Masonic education.
