INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis police say domestic violence calls the first five months of this year were 13 percent higher than for the same period last year.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reports its officers investigated 1,950 domestic abuse cases through the end of May, compared with 1,727 during the first five months of 2008.

Police Lt. Tim Leffler says the economy might be the reason, but there's no data to support that. However, Julia Sipes of the Salvation Army, which runs a shelter for battered women, says when money is tight, it creates pressure at home.

Sipes and other advocates say the economy has hurt their fundraising.
