And, though Martin may have been a very good astronomer, he might also simply have been wrong about future events. That's why we need things to measure. I also worry when people suggest 'reading between the lines' if only because it seems people tend to make up whatever lines support their particular position or belief. What we *do* know is that Earth is not halted in orbit, and that there is no intruder hovering near the Sun, and that we are able to spot brown dwarfs and other planets light years away, but not PX. |

I somehow have trouble believing that a renowned US Naval observatory employee could have over looked that, where as you did not?? I said inaccurate, not miscalculation. There's a huge difference. Their figure for the mass at that time was inaccurate. That is not the Naval Observatory's fault, it was simply the limitation of the data they had available to them at the time. Neptune, being the farthest and youngest of the major planets discovered (not counting pluto) its mass figure had a considerable amount of uncertainty. Pluto's initial mass estimates were also quite a bit in error, percent wise far more so than Neptune and it was Harrington himself who figured out its true mass to a much higher accuracy. But from what I understand, there was a "white lie" in order to fool the bush administration into invading Iraq (which was curiously called operation planet x) [link to en.wikipedia.org] And during this time Nancy was under the impression that there was going to be a pole shift and thought it best put pets to sleep in order to save them the hardship of starvation. There was also a *curiously named* operation Peter Pan - as I've previously said, presumably this was not named on the basis that the military were expecting Captain Hook to show up.
