Y2K was overhyped, if there ever was a danger, it was more because of an oversight in the code than anything sinister. The viruses that the NSA and CIA lost were deliberately created to infiltrate and infect vital infrastructure and systems of an enemy. Big difference. It isn't even the fact that hypothetically someone could take everything down. The scary fact is that the human species is devolving and no longer learning the skills that allowed us to survive and thrive in the first place. I work around and with younger people. Most of them no longer feel the need to actually learn and commit to memory any knowledge, because wikepedia is always there to retrieve the "facts" the moment you need them. I was training some young people last summer, they questioned the need to commit certain vital information to memory, when there is a data base they can look up the answer on as needed. If the data base goes down, many of them wouldn't be able to answer the easiest question from a customer. Without the computer they don't know shit about the product they sell and the company they work for. My industry isn't vital, but I know this happens in other vital workplaces.

We are way too dependent on computers and the internet, we have made ourselves absolutely vulnerable, and it could be wiped out in the blink of an eye. Only a very few would have a clue what to do, the freaked out masses would be out of control. If people wake up now, we may be able to get back on a sane path, but I don't see that happening because people have become entitled and lazy.
