Arkansas Weather
No, no new severe weather tonight...yet...

Just an interesting tidbit.

I've lived here all my life. We've always had wild weather, as long as i can remember.

Tonight on the news the weather guy said we had another Derecho move in last night. Another one? Really? So there was one Friday and then again last night?

I've been obsessed with the weather for as long as I can remember. Derecho's are relatively new to me...I was under the impression they're somewhat unusual.

So we've had 2. In a weekend...

For a while I myself and other Arkies have been commenting on the unusual weather lately. So is the Derecho going to be the new thing? Are these wild weather patterns ushering something new and different (and exciting)?

Just some thoughts.

What is a derecho? I've never heard of it? Suppose I could google - but we have you. :)

 Quoting: Enaid

what makes a derecho different are the winds

here's the official wiki answer...

a widespread and long-lived, violent convectively induced straight-line windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms in the form of a squall line usually taking the form of a bow echo. Derechos blow in the direction of movement of their associated storms, similar to a gust front, except that the wind is sustained and generally increases in strength behind the "gust" front. A warm weather phenomenon, derechos occur mostly in summer, especially June and July in the Northern Hemisphere. They can occur at any time of the year and occur as frequently at night as in the daylight hours.

Says they usually occur this time of year. And I'm sure they do.
We're just not used to them here.

Re: Arkansas Weather
Hey Tessa, I'm in Arkansas too, White County. Lived here my whole life. Last Friday was the first time I'd ever seen a Derecho. I'm pretty sure I'd remember if I'd seen that type of cloud before. Ominous, but beatiful at the same time. I was just about to leave work when the storm came through. I went out side and a co-worker asked me if we should be worried as she pointed to the clouds. They were bow shaped and dark, and had little fingers hanging down that looked like they could start spinning into funnels at any minute. Needless to say, I stayed at work until the storm was over.

The bow was angled directly toward my location. I saw a picture on the news that was taken at an angle that was more from the side and the clouds looked even more spectacular than what I saw. Crazy stuff.
