Well, if you are sports savvy, especially baseball, there is a shortage of umpires for youth baseball and it pays pretty decent if you're willing to hustle. If you're in Houston, I can help you.

There has to be something in this thread that can be used by everybody here to get a foot up in the world.

Many complain there is no work, but you have to be willing to work to get work. Jobs don't grow on trees in good times either.

If you have any artistic skills you can become a decorative painter/muralist. I do have a degree in graphic design which helps me come up with some really eye-catching designs for the larger public stuff, but as long as you have a steady hand you should be able to paint.

I started off hustling a few paint jobs on the side when I was first starting out. Start-up costs are super low, when I first started all I had was a drop cloth, a roller, a paint tray and a step ladder.

At the beginning in 2008, I tried many different ways of acquiring clients, craigslist, business cards, flyers, findamuralist.com, thumbtack.com.... and now I have so much work with repeat clients and referrals, that everybody calls me and i dont have to look for work anymore.

Now I'm trying to build up a YouTube page so that someday I can eventually have a another stream of income from that.

And I'm also working on building up my Etsy page which only has about three things right now to purchase.

And since I technically work out of my home I get all the tax write-offs of owning a home business, plus 14,000 business miles (x $.54 per mile) in tax write-offs each year too.

Yeah .. may work in america.

In europa you won´t start any of your business without major costs and paper work.

That´s why we are toast as long as government has the means to control business...

Plenty of hurdles, costs and paperwork here in the states. Started my own business 2 years ago and the Gov makes it as difficult as possible at every turn.

If your little startup gets big enough, you will need a city business license and a state business/sales tax license. It will all differ, depending on what you do.

Around here, one of the most lucrative jobs around is being a housekeeper, hiring out to do housework. You are fortunate indeed to find someone who will do housework for $15/hr. These women do not pay taxes, they work for cash, and often use your cleaning supplies. So they make out like a bandit. The young ones with kids on welfare usually have a live in male who has a union job, and they are living quite well.

I make them sign a paper that says they are contract work, and they take care of their own social security and industrial insurance and unemployment. That way, I am covered if they get busted for welfare fraud or tax avasion.

I paint murals and do decorative painting. It was very low overhead to start, and I already had the art talent. I make about $150-$200 per day that I work. Lately I've been redoing a lot of people's front doorways by faux woodgraining them.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7855502

I found my old response from a few years ago.

It wasn't too hard to teach myself how to do woodgraining.

It's an easy money maker.

That summer I posted that, I was doing a LOT of woodgrain doors! When one neighbor sees how good it looks, then they want it too! One job ends up turning into multiple jobs.

Crafty people can start putting together fabric paint items to sell on Etsy or Ebay. Then try to get commission orders.

Some fabric paint-based jobs I've done in the past:
