remember Biosphere 2 ? Have you ever wondered what it was really like to live in there or what they learned from the experiments?

I've seen a couple of documentarys on Biosphere 2 , but this is a talk by one of the participants of the program,Jane Poynter, she lived in Biosphere 2 for , as she puts it, 2 years and 20 minutes. She says it totally changed her, and that the impact of what they learned will truly help us in many ways in the coming future to change our current destructive ways and transform ourselves from a biocidal society to a biophillic one- her words, my interpretive spelling LOL... I found it very interesting and informative, thought i'd pass it along :-)

[link to www.ted.com]

snipped from her Bio :-)

Jane Poynter is one of only eight people to live in Biosphere 2 for two years. In 1991, she and seven others were locked in a three-acre, hermetically-sealed environment in the Arizona desert. Nothing was allowed in or out, and everything had to be recycled. Poynter, and the rest of the team, endured dangerously low oxygen levels and constant hunger, but they survived -- something many scientists said was impossible.

After leaving Biosphere 2, Poynter went on to found Paragon Space Development Corporation, along with her former fellow biospherian and now husband, Taber MacCallum. Paragon develops technologies that might allow humans to live in extreme environments such as outer space and underwater. As president of Paragon, Poynter has had experiments flown on the International Space Station, Russian Mir Space Station and US Space Shuttle, as well as working on underwater technologies with the US Navy.

However, Poynter has not given up on her homeland -- Biosphere 1. She continues to consult on and write about sustainable development and new green technologies. In concert with the World Bank, she has worked on projects to mitigate climate change and to grow crops in typically arid and hostile regions of Africa and Central America. Through talks and appearances, she builds awareness of the fragile state of the environment. After all, she knows what it’s like to watch your biosphere begin to break down.

very ... and according to her, the research seems to have had some valuable results- like the plants that they think will grow on the moon in those terribly harsh conditions, and being able to practice how to provide and cope with the issues that arise in an artificial oxygen rich environment- to replace and rebalance oxygen levels if it is lost due to some catastrophe.

To me it seems it is absolutely essential to continue this sort of experiment - at least if we ever intend to truly begin trying to terraform other planets or live in any remote space locations...

That Paulie shore needed to be shoved out the closest airlock....

And that it didn't work.

It was a sham how they presented it.

As I recall one of the Biosphere experiments (can't remember which) ended badly with the occupants splitting into factions, food stealing and general depression.

It may well have been a sort of observer effect, the fact that they knew it was an experiment and there was an end date, which they began to long for.

I would hope that in circumstances where this is your life, or there is no guarantee of coming back out we would fare a little better.

she says they were all " a little mad " by the end of it, i think it would be awfully hard to survive mentally as well as physically (and that i am certainly NOT of the right temperament LOL) people are way more complicated than plants and oxygen levels !

Funny ,,,, how interesting, very interesting, is the timing for this particular thread to crop up on the main page today ... right when there are all sorts of reports of major incoming NEO comet, Planet-X (you name it) objects - supposedly imminent in weeks / months. See this thread with source quoted for juicy info being [link to www.space.com] - whoa!

Thread: Military Hush-Up: Incoming Space Rocks Now Classified

.... and then there's that very interesting correlation in timing of such rumors with the appearance of the loose gun county, NK, starting up recently with their convenient *nuke* tests, and another one pending any time now .... and the aging leader (what was reported dead several months ago) reappears on the scene & now acts like some global Yosemite Sam saber rattling threats to irrationally launch nukes on various targets ... acting very much like some wild card nutcase.

Honestly, I think they all (global ptb) wear different masks and play 'war' for show,,, but in truth they are all sitting at the same table scheming, in some James Bond bunker hidden under the volcano island and plotting together with Dr. Evil ... perhaps?

Thinking along lines of "Catastrophism" ,,, also the writings of Immanuel Velikovsky .... hmmmmmmmm

And .... there are rumors all over net that the Biosphere experiments were actually set up to perfect techniques for the deep survival bunkers (elite-only) plus secret off-planet bases being planned for the TEOTAWAKI event that the ptb are keeping covered up. The experiments were reportedly made public to get tax funding from public sources.

Yes. Sadly it wasn't in space, and nor did he get shoved out the airlock like he should have.

And sadly he wasn't bludgeoned to death either. The only more talentless SNL person has to be Will Farrell.

lol i got a very vivid visual image there !! of someone dancing naked in these lush jungle plants :::grins:: now THAT would be me!!! i think some aspects of it sound absolutely GREAT.. learning more about yourself and the rest of the world as you go about these fantastic experiments that could honestly help mankind some day...but that some other aspects like possibly sharing a tiny habitat for 2 solid years with someone i cannot tolerate for some reason ( not that i'm so terribly intolerant of others LOL but i AM a tad of a loner)....... might prove be a bit more challenging than i could cope with i think... it's sure not for ME ...but i hope they continue the research :-)

Pinal Pioneer Parkway is a great motorcycle ride, and I do it at least once a month in the winter. Right at the dead end takes you to downtown tucson, left takes you to B-2 and Oracle.

I first heard about B-2 in the late '80's when i wo4ked for solavolt International, a PV house; we got a request for porposal from the B-2 people for a PV array to run the entire place.

Of course, the quote was astronomical, so they ended up getting their power on the grid from TEPCO, Tucson Electric Power Company.

I did take my wife and kid (then six or so) to visit when the first people stayed there. We found out later that on several cases, some of them left the enclosure, one in particular when he cut his hand badly and needed medical attention.

It was a great place to visit and still is. The science practiced there in the old days wasn't bery rigorous, and, as you probably know, the place simply wasn't big enough to keep a complex ecosystem going, even with power inputs. Too many critters and plants simply died.

You can do tours now (or you could as of last year); if you're in the area, by all means go check it out!
