Boycott Kellogg's For Using Genetically Modified Sugar in its Cereal Products

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) has called for a boycott of the Kellogg Company, also known as Kellogg's, after the company refused to sign a pledge refusing to use genetically modified sugar in its cereal products.

Sugar from genetically modified sugar beets hit the U.S. market for the first time this year, making the beets the first genetically engineered crop to enter the U.S. food stream since the widespread introduction of modified corn and soy in the 1990s. The sugar has been modified by the Monsanto Corporation to be resistant to the company's signature herbicide, Roundup.

"These GE sugar beets do not provide any environmental, nutritional or food quality benefits whatsoever," the OCA said. "They are created by Monsanto to withstand massive doses of herbicides and keep farmers on a never ending pesticide treadmill that is bad news for rural communities, the environment and consumers. The bottom line is that there are numerous options to GE sugar beets."

More than 73 food producers and retailers have signed a pledge not to use genetically modified sugar in their products. When asked by the OCA to make such a pledge, however, Kellogg's said it had no intention of doing so. While the company will make sure not to use modified sugar in any of its European products -- the European Union has not approved sugar from the beets for human consumption -- Kellogg's insists that U.S. consumers do not care if their food is genetically modified.

"However, poll after poll have demonstrated that Americans want GE foods labeled and restricted," the OCA said.

The OCA said that it decided to launch a Kellogg's boycott only after the company refused to heed more than 15,000 letters asking the company not to use the modified beet sugar. In addition, the company clearly has the logistical ability to avoid genetically modified sugar, since it is already doing so for its European products.

Slow poisoning, there doesn't seem to be any natural foods left. Maybe we should all start gardens, then at least we know what we are eating.

But... is there any more good seed. yeahsure

Sugar is all chemicals anyway, even if natural. I'm not sure how genetically modifying beets could make a difference with sugar. Now strawberries... I think they have all kinds of weird ANIMAL parts in them. Jellyfish or slugs or something... that's gross.

I already have. I've called them several times asking about their GMO ingredients, they don't disclose anything. I also asked why they don't produce any non-kosher cereal for non-jews. Again, it's like they don't understand the question.

Plants have been genetically modified since ancient times and before recorded history.

Many vegetables do not now resemble their original form.

So I guess that was all bad?

Anything that one buys from a regular grocery store I am sure has something in it that is gmo. If you don't want gmo, then you have to go to your local health food stores that sell organic.

Layne,

Thank you for your comments regarding the use of plants. Like you, we want only the best ingredients to go into our products.

Biotech ingredients are safe and have become common in the open market. Sixty to seventy percent of packaged foods in the U.S. include biotechnology crops. Even organic ingredients can contain biotech ingredients due to cross-pollination.

We use biotech ingredients based on the backing of groups including the World Health Organization, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and the American Medical Association that confirm there are no safety concerns.

You have placed trust in us to provide healthy, nutritious, and safe food. We will continue to evaluate our ingredients, suppliers and product formulas to give you the best products possible.

Sincerely,

Layne, The Token Gimp!
Here was my reply to Kellogg's:
Dear Idalia,

Some of what is contained in your reply may be true, but mostly you replied with a prepared statement.
Please do not be offended, may I ask your nationality and where this reply came from?

Kellogg's primary objective is to reward the share holders as they invest with an expectation of relatively shortterm cash gains 10 or 20 years maximum with limited risk. Financial reward is what they demand.

What most of the customers want is a safe, quality product, at an affordable price. Kashi is promoted like a green product, but very few people know it is made by Kelloggs. Why? Because it would hurt Kashi sales if the public knew the truth. The Same goes for other brands, Morning Star

Some dairy farmers decided to add genetically engineered Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH/BST) The Federal Government has declared it unsafe and are warning people as such.
The European union has banned them. Most everyone I know adds milk to cereal so know we are adding modified to modified to modified and so on.

If you are confident then publish Kellogg's studies.
Perhaps Kellogg's can explain why people continue to have increased rates in celiac disease, diabetes, along with acute obesity and a variety of auto-immune diseases.

GMO grains are in cereal, made with GMO and/or GE beet sugar, using GMO soy oil to replace transfats.
Why has Kellogg’s has worked to block US legislation requiring producers to label items containing GMOs? I will be contacting my Senators & representatives as well as NFO to let them know GMO/GE Food is wrong.

The lists go on, but you get my point.
It is time to start using only pure, unmolested, heirloom seed in all your products.
I for one and many more I know will be boycotting your products. I've read the history of the company and I believe the founder Will Keith Kellogg would roll over in his grave if he knew the direction his namesake company had taken.

I am an American Capitalist, fiscal Conservative with socially Libertarian, Christian views and I was raised on a dairy farm in Wisconsin with a large garden and know what food shopuld taste like.

PEACE,

LAYNE NELSON
