Support you LOCAL animal rescue groups!
A puppy mill breeder is in it for the MONEY, not the dogs. They will usually have multiple breds, and many litters a year, often many litters at the same time.

A legitimate breeder is in it to imporve and continue the breed. They rarely have more than one litter in a year and usually it is one liter every two years. When they sell a dog as a pet, they require it be spayed or nuetered. The shots are up to date and you can alwways verify it. Another thing is that they will not sell a dog before it is 8 weeks old.

The dogs that come from puppy mills often end up in the pound or on the street or die of some genetic disease caused by bad breeding. Do not support puppy mills, if you see a dog at a petstore it is most likely from a puppy mill and the people at the flea market and on the highway selling dogs are not legitimate breeders.

PETA and HSUS have no care about this, they are more concerned with making money and getting insane animal laws passed.

If you want to support an organization that is really doing good for the animals, support your local rescue groups and your LOCAL SPCA.

Im with you, its one of my strongest beliefs.

DO NOT PATRONIZE ANY PET STORE THAT SELLS PUPPIES AT ALL.
GET PUPPIES OR EVEN OLDER DOGS FROM THE SPCA WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
SPAY AND NEUTER

THE SAD FACTS.
ONLY 1 OUT OF 10 DOGS EVER FINDS A PERMANENT HOME
ONLY 1 OUT OF 12 CATS EVER FINDS A PERMANENT HOME
IN AMERICA 800 DOGS OR CATS ARE EUTHANIZED EVERY HOUR....24 HOURS A DAY.

I foster dogs for rescue groups in California and I have asked hereein this site for others to consider doing the same, even just one fostered animal would be one that will not die. If anyone is interested i would gladly offer my addy and get them connected to a rescue group near them.

Often most will pay for food, shots and neutering as they care very much about doing this and appreciate any help they get from others.

Re: Support you LOCAL animal rescue groups!
God bless you for caring. I have a dog that was saved by a local rescue. When found, it was estimated that she was about 1 year old. She had been starved down to a mere 23 lbs, which is horrifying for a German Shepherd. She had somehow survived distemper during this period of starvation, and was left with several problems as a result. Nerve damage had rendered her back, left leg as lame so she could barely walk. Nerve damage also left her with a sort of a tick in her head. According to the rescue when people came to see her, no one showed any intrest in adopting her due to her physical challanges. When I first saw her, I cried my eyes out, and swore that she would never be alone again. I took her home, and very slowly her health and physical stamina began to improve. Alot of love and care convinced her that people are good. I have had her for 4 years now, and I can't imagine life without her. She is my constant 'shadow' and does not let me out of her sight. I would recomend that anyone intrested in adoptin a pet to open their heart to a 'broken' dog or cat. They give so much love in return. hf

And you can tell the puppy mills in your area by looking at the classified ads.

They will have many breeds for sale, not just one.

My co-worker works with a husky rescu group in Dallas, and my mother works with a poodle rescue group in Albuquerque. The state of New Mexico has a small human population so the Albuquerque poodle rescue rescues dogs from all over the state.

You can look up local rescue groups for any breed in your area on the internet, but sometimes it is good to have a contact. Thanks for posting Mickeyblue.

I agree. I have resuced dogs, two were 'stolen' by friends who saw them being abused. One was a miniature dachsund who was not fed regularly and kept locked up in a shed for days. My friend was the neighbor and saw the dog running down the road one day, so picked her up and brought her to me. I had that dog for 17 1/2 years. I think she had 9 lives like a cat. Another one was brought by my daughter's friend. His neighbors were breeding fighting dogs. He wouldn't tell me how he got the dog, just that it needed asylum. He was a funny german shepherd/pit bull mix. Had a great personality, but had a loose wire in his head about small dogs. I had to be vigilant with him. I would not recommend rescuing a fighting dog as they can be dangerous around small children and other pets. George was a great dog and liked children, though I never left him unattended around them. I had him for 7 years.

The dog I have now is a standard poodle that I got from my mother. His owner was hit by a truck and could not take care of him any more.

I wished you would have been around at the time of Jesus when God demanded the daily slaughter of thousands of nice, fresh young and umblemished animals for sacrifice and appeasement. Pity all these nice animals had to be slaughtered with the throat slit and the blood poured into the temple for God appeasement.

Thanks for the stars Virgil. I think everyone thought differently back during the time of Jesus. Animals were only food or competition for food, I don't remember any stories of people having pets back then.

Re: Support you LOCAL animal rescue groups!
It amazes me that the puppy stores around here stay in business. They sell puppy mill pure bred and designer (mixed) breed puppies. Often they are sick, and some die. People in this economy will still buy a 1000 dollar poodle mix, or other small breed. Actually they get robbed of puppies quite often too.

I think there are reputable breeders. I don't have an issue with them at all. But they generally have a couple of litters a year if that. They will check you out as much as you should them. They will agree to take back a dog for its lifetime should something happen. Many like the non show dogs that are sold as pets to be fixed.

I've been fostering through my local humane society for a few months now and it's so rewarding. i've also adopted four animals from them. it's heart breaking to walk through the facility and see all those little faces just wanting to be loved and to have a safe place to live out their lives. I appreciate you for creating this thread and emphasizing "local". don't contribute to the Humane Society of the United States because nearly none of the proceeds actually goes towards helping the animals.

Exactly! HSUS & PETA are money making entities that have nothing real to do with animals. HSUS spent their money suing Ringling Brothers for custody of Elephants because it would get them in the news. There are many small carnivals with elephants that really need help but that is too small for them and as far as they are concerned it is irrelevant that Ringling Brothers takes care of their animals, they just want the publicity!!!

Bumps for the pups.

I've been keeping an eye out for a compatible pound puppy.

Some people needed help w/ a deaf dog - either adopt or foster until the fall. I offered to help them, but haven't heard back. :(
