Ronnie Biggs 'feels no remorse for train robbery and could still return to violent crime'

A report by the parole board reveals that Ronnie Biggs feels 'no regret' over his role in the £2.6 million train robbery

Ronnie Biggs still poses a risk of associating with other criminals and returning to crime, an official report warned just eight days before the Great Train Robber is set to be freed from prison.

A report by the parole board warns that there is 'little evidence' Biggs' attitude to crime has changed, and only his poor health and age have reduced the threat of him returning to violent offending.

Despite his unreformed attitudes, Biggs is safe to release because he is now unable to speak or move easily - he is fed through a tube and communicates using an 'alphabet panel' after suffering a series of strokes.

The report said Biggs had expressed 'no regret' over his role in the £2.6 million train robbery.

Today's revelations come eight days before Biggs, 79, is scheduled to be released from the hospital wing of Norwich Prison.

The parole board report conceded that Biggs's release - which has still to be formally approved by Justice Secretary Jack Straw - was likely to prompt public and political debate.

However, it concluded that because the risks can 'safely be managed' he should be freed.

The report stated: 'In terms of his attitude and risk areas there is little evidence beyond his increased age to suggest that, if he were able to return to his old criminal associates and lifestyle, the risk of involvement in further violent offending has reduced significantly.

'He does not regret his offending.'

'Mr Biggs now describes what happened to the train driver as a 'light tap'. He says he has no regrets about the conspiracy and subsequent events,' the report stated.

'What has quite plainly reduced enormously is his capacity to reoffend.

'The medical evidence indicates overwhelmingly that his own ability to commit further acts of violence has reduced to an extremely low level.'

The parole board believes the main risk of Biggs' release is from his association with criminal peers and consequent indirect involvement.

Biggs, from Lambeth, London, was a member of a 15-strong gang which attacked the Glasgow to London mail train at Ledburn, Bucks, in August 1963, before making off with £2.6million.

After being given a 30-year sentence, he escaped from Wandsworth prison, south London, in a furniture van after spending 15 months in jail.

He was on the run for more than 30 years, living in Spain, Australia and Brazil, before returning to the UK voluntarily in 2001.

His family have said he hopes to be free to celebrate his 80th birthday on August 8, 46 years to the day since the heist.

Direct from the Ministry of Justice..

Ronnie Biggs is refused parole because he's 'unrepentant'.

The Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs has been refused parole by Justice Secretary Jack Straw.

The news comes as his solicitor revealed that Biggs, who is in hospital after breaking his hip in a fall, had "taken a turn for the worse".

Giovanni di Stefano said Biggs' son Michael was on his way to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Biggs, who is being held in Norwich Prison, is in hospital after breaking his hip in a fall at the weekend.

The Parole Board report said the risk Biggs posed was "manageable under the proposed risk management plan and consequently parole is recommended".

Biggs was a member of the 15-strong gang which attacked a mail train at Ledburn, Buckinghamshire, on 8 August 1963.

After being given a 30-year sentence, Biggs escaped from Wandsworth Prison, south London, in a furniture van after spending 15 months in jail.

No... they're being assholes about releasing him because he PISSED THEM OFF.

He pulled a well planned, decently executed train robbery and got away.
He left the country and made a mockery out of them for a long time.
He's proud of the job and quite frankly he' a bit of a folk hero.

Let him go, he has served more time than most pedos get given.

He's done his time, he's old and sick.
I'd like to see him released and maybe get a book written before he dies.
Let him go out with dignity.

I would also add this is classic 'give people an inch and they take a mile.'

He came back to England for free healthcare within the prison system. the deal was clear; you can have healthcare and reasonable conditions in British prison or you can stay in Brazil and die.

Freedom was never an option.

for me Ronnie is a bit of a legend! of course he isnt repentant, look at the life hes had!

ffs let the old guy go, hes no danger to anyone. he cant walk, talk, go to the toilet. how the fuck is he gonna hurt anyone? what? trip them over as they walk by him? woopdidooo!

its a blatant slap in the face for his family, and i feel sorry for them. ffs, there are way more dangerous people walking around out here unchecked.

on a personal note my mums best friend was stabbed to death on her daughters doorstep by her own husband 3 years ago. guess what? hes out. got a few years with diminished responsibility, even though he had the foresight to pick up a knife and drive 50miles to kill her, then call my mum and tell her he'd done it!! and theres the fucking hypocrisy with all this shit. the fact that human life is less important than cash. like thats a shock to anyone here?!
happy now?

Kay Burley is horrible.

Regardless what we may think of Biggs, this whole thing goes to show that while the authorities will tolerate us murdering eachother, God help us if we steal money...'cos that's what's most important to them.

Yep that's why Bernie gets 150 years...
150 YEARS?!
Yet murderers and rapists barely get 12 at most.

Crazy.
Ronnie was an old skool train robber, tough job to plan and carry off.
Kudos to him and fuck the crown, its greed and obvious concern for money over human life.

Train robber Biggs wins freedom

Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs has been granted release from his prison sentence on compassionate grounds, Justice Secretary Jack Straw has said.

He explained that the decision was based on medical evidence that Biggs's condition had deteriorated and he was not expected to recover.

Biggs is severely ill in hospital with pneumonia and doctors have said there is "not much hope" for him.

Biggs, 79, was refused parole by Mr Straw last month. [More]

Godspeed, Ronnie.
