It seems you put the cart before the horse in your misinterpretation...or did you even read it?: Excerpt: "Viral myocarditis typically starts with flu-like symptoms but can worsen quickly. That's why it is absolutely crucial to identify these symptoms early as the first step to reducing the severity of the virus and its effects on the heart." In many cases, children and young adults complain of difficulty in breathing, which can go on for several days. Other symptoms may also indicate viral myocarditis in children such as: -- Shortness of breath -- Elevated temperature -- Loss of appetite -- Bluish or grayish discoloration of the skin -- Chest pain -- Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) ------ In other words, viral myocarditis often first presents as the flu not a "complication of the flu". And then, of course, there is clearly the opening sentence: "Influenza, strep throat and the common cold afflict many people during the winter months, particularly in children and young adults, yet there is one often undiagnosed viral condition that can be far deadlier then these common viruses." Among persons infected with previous variants of swine influenza viruses, clinical syndromes have ranged from mild respiratory illness, to lower respiratory tract illness, dehydration, or pneumonia. Deaths caused by previous variants of swine influenza viruses have occasionally occurred. Although data on the spectrum of illness is not yet available for this novel influenza A (H1N1), clinicians should expect complications to be similar to seasonal influenza: exacerbation of underlying chronic medical conditions, upper respiratory tract disease (sinusitis, otitis media, croup) lower respiratory tract disease (pneumonia, bronchiolitis, status asthmaticus), cardiac (myocarditis, pericarditis), musculoskeletal (myositis, rhabdomyolysis), neurologic (acute and post-infectious encephalopathy, encephalitis, febrile seizures, status epilepticus), toxic shock syndrome, and secondary bacterial pneumonia with or without sepsis. |

OMG...do you understand how the data, such as the above, are collected and reported (research the methodology for an eye-opener)? If you want to convince me, then give me a reputable source citing the number of children dying from, or even developing, myocarditis following flu. And since myocarditis often presents as flu, then I request a data report that controlled for that variable. I'm interested in the time frame from fever onset to death as well, which is another telling variable. Then you will have my attention. . |

By the bye, did you happen to read the operative word in the first sentence of your last article: rare[/]? . Your example makes no sense. Typhoid fever is a disease caused by a specific bacteria. Myocarditis is a condition. Myocarditis, like pneumonia and encephalitis can be caused by many different things. Influenza can cause all of these conditions. Duh. Rare, yes, in the normal seasonal flu. Who the heck knows what this novel influenza will cause? Already we are seeing oddities - like the ages of the victims, and my God - it's June! The Bird flu (h5n1) in particular, caused this in some victims, which is why the sudden deaths reminded me of that possibility. It is just speculation, as I have seen very little data released as to the specific causes of these sudden deaths. People were wondering why hearts might be affected. Myocarditis is possibly why. "A human outbreak of avian Influenza A H5N1 could see many cases of influenza-associated myocarditis and thus intensive care unit physicians should be aware of the possibilities of mobile closed chest cardiopulmonary bypass." In 1918 persons with the BEST immune systems were the ones who were sickest and died..... NOT those of ill health. The 1918 victims presented with bleeding from orifices and vomiting blood, coughing blood, rectal bleeding, and nose bleeding. Post mortums revealed lungs that looked like "Strawberry Jelly".
