Your best bet may be to put it in storage for a few months. Before doing so make lots of packets of baking soda in paper towels. Lay in about 1/4C of baking soda in a paper towel, fold it up and tape it together. Use BLUE painters tape to tape these on either side of the mattress, wrap the whole thing in thick plastic, seal that plastic with duct tape. Over time (months) the baking soda will absorb the smell, reducing not completely removing the smell. If you are in a hurry to use the mattress you can "bake it" in the sun for a day, flipping every couple three hours to bake' each side with the packs in a plastic covering, remove it, remove the packs and let it lay in the sun for a day, turning it ever so often. Repeat as needed. This can be tedious and depending on how long it was exposed to smoke may take months on its own. Again it will not remove all of the smell, but it will reduce the smell. Once you get it manageable you might want to let it air a few more days in full sun, then when you pull it in use febreeze or similar on it on a regular basis. Use a mattress pad (cleaned with your favorite stinking softener). The reality is the mattress is most likely not worth saving. Step 2 Pour baking soda over the mattress so that it is completely coated. Cover the mattress with a fitted sheet and allow it to sit overnight. Step 3 The next day, take off the fitted sheet and allow it some more time to completely dry. Vacuum up the baking soda from the mattress using an attachment or a handheld mini vac. Step 4 Spray an odor-absorbing deodorizer (such as Febreze) all over the mattress and again allow it a few hours to absorb the cigarette smell. Open the windows to allow fresh air to replace the cigarette odor. Step 5 If you still smell traces of the cigarette smoke, fill a handheld carpet shampooer with a solution comprised of carpet cleaner, Febreze and a little bit of baking soda. Take your time running the cleaning brushes across the mattress. Allow it to dry for a few hours before putting sheets back on. . The odor of stale cigarettes, although it smells bad, will not kill you. However, all those chemical deodorizers are extremely toxic. The baking soda suggestion is very good ... but if it were me, I would not use the toxic chemicals. imho Last Edited by Aquarius 7 on 06/28/2009 01:45 AM . First go buy a plastic mattress cover, that zips up, and completely covers the mattress. This is not very expensive. Put it on the mattress and zip it up. Covers the tobacco and dust mites. Then buy a nice mattress cover that is water proof (also some plastic) spray the first cover with fabreeze, and let it dry. Then slide on the nice cover and zip it up. Finally, use an old blanket over the mattress pad and them put an old sheet on top befor you put your nice sheets on. You can get a nice pad cover at a discount store, that carries quality brands. This will get you through until you can buy yourself a new one. Or rent to own, is a good way to get a new one that's delivered. I got a used matress pad from a rental place for cheap when we moved across the country....ocean. We were just getting started and I got a deal on it. Did this and have it 16 years later and it's still a nice mattress. Hardly ever used for many years now, but still in the spare bedroom. When ever anyone stays over in that room, they are still quite comfortable. Someday, you can pass the mattress on to a smoker. But good mattresses last a long time. |
