Tips for helping memory?
With letting my brain slip for so long, I believe my IQ is lowering to the point where other people might consider me to be "mentally retarded". The reason I say this is because a lot of my knowledge that I used to have is gone. Or, I don't remember it. I can read an entire book and walk away remembering absolutely nothing about it. Not even the title. I've tried those "memory game" piles of shit, but that doesn't help. My mind doesn't wander in the process, and does stay attached to the material, but I can't "take in" any of the information, per se. I have a strong desire to learn, but it would seem pointless to keep trying when I can't retain any of the information.

The only area this does not apply to is music.

Maybe constant sleep deprivation has rotted my brain? I don't know.

Can somebody help?

There are supplements in the health food stores that seem to very popular. I picked up one called Focus Formula. I had it in my little basket and several people stopped me and said how great it was, and so did the cashier. It is DHA, Huperzine-A, and Vinpocetine, plus many other vitamins and minerals.

Re: Tips for helping memory?
Tips for good memory retention:

Foods:

1.) 2 Tablespoons of Flax seed oil each day. Good cheap
organic flax seed oil is available at traders joes. If you can't get any flax seed oil, then Cod Liver oil will do. you need fatty omega 3's.

2.) 2 hard boiled eggs in the morning.

3.) Consume DHEA in the morning

Activities:

1.) Get plenty of healthy sleep

2.) Get exersize

3.) Get fresh air (need oxygen for brain)

Tools:

1.) Be selective of what you read and remember. As you age, you have less space for new memories. So select what you want to remember.

2.) Caloric Stimulation...

** This can be very dangerous, so USE at your own risk, and be careful.

HOW TO:

Caloric stimulation is used on coma patients to test them for brain activity. Dr's will pour warm water in one ear, while pouring cold water in the other ear.

This will stimulate blood flow in the brain, and cause the brain to work in a single brain, instead of two hemispheres.

To do it, get a cup of luke warm water, and 1 cup of slightly cool water (just below room temperature)

Add salt to each one, about a teaspoon, to make sure all bacteria is killed.

Then pour the warm water in one ear, then immediately flip over and pour the cold water in the other.

At first you may not notice any thing, but just wait.

You will know it's working, when you start to get a little dizzy.

If you don't get dizzy at first, try more water. If more water doesn't work, then carefully lower the temp of the cold water.

WARNING: Do NOT lower it too much, you can injure you ear drum if you pour water too cold in your ear canal.

When you start to feel dizzy, stop. Take a rest, lay down, and let the dizziness go away.

That night, you might experience strange dreams. This means new neurons are being wired together.

Hemisync:

Check out the Hemisync tapes, those have worked for me.

Hope this helps.

There is a body of research that suggests diet can and often does make a huge difference in cognition. For example, foods high in antioxidents reduce inflammation in the brain that is associated with cognitive decline and dementia. I'm not going to post links and references here as a simple google search on diet and memory will yield a lot of promising research. In brief avoid all fried foods, high concentrations of red meat, caffine and refined sugar. Foods that boost brain power include nuts like walnut, fresh vegis and fruits. Foods to avoid include all the foods were normally associate with high LDL Cholesterol.

Activities like chess, puzzles and games that involve spatial reasoning may all contribute to increased memory and improved cognition.

Mind your stress, it will turn you into a basket case. Try meditation, yoga or deep breathing

Re: Tips for helping memory?
The lack of sleep will have a huge impact on your memory. Without sleep I have to function on total autopilot. I can barely remember any new information, and cannot do new physical tasks easily.

I work normally if I'm doing things I normally do or think about, but information synthesis is the first thing to go when I lack sleep, even for just one day.

Personally, I believe my memory to be quite strong. My memory functions photographically (for the most part). I also have moderate synaesthesia which allows me to have "redundant copies" of memories. If I can't remember what it looks like, I'll remember how the scene smelled, or felt, or sounded, and therefore resurrect the memory in it's entirety.

Plenty of sleep, and less alcohol will be the first steps you need to take if you want any hope of restoring your memory.

My memory is sometimes so acute that sometimes after a long night of drinking, the next morning I have trouble finding large words I used to use commonly, or remembering other small chunks of data. Alcohol destroys memory.

With sufficient repetition of information, you can avoid data loss via alcohol, but the problem is that there is not enough time in a day to re-learn so much information, and some of it is novel and cannot be restored anyways.

I did so many drugs and drinking in my mid teens that I have forgotten or buried most of my past. People I've known since that period will say, "Remember when..." and I have no inkling of this amazing situation they recall - Rarely I'll remember, barely.

At about 18 I stopped doing drugs and halted my daily drinking - Memory restored and my brain was suddenly able to start healthily storing memories again. I feel like I was reborn around that time, because I could suddenly easily remember events and knowledge and experiences.

Tips:

More Sleep
Less Drinking
More Vitamins (of all kinds)
Ginkgo Biloba
Less Marijuana (only reduces short term memory)

Try to remember and repeat most of your day's learnings and experiences through your mind's eye while going to sleep.

NinjaEdit: Try to remember/record experiences and information in more than one sense at a time - Not only in the most relevant sense. This allows you to have multiple (yet seperate) copies of memories, which allow you to more easily recover, and prevent losing them.

Try to remember your surroundings in all places - Then try to recall what was there - Then check to see what you forgot. (Eventually, with a few years of doing this, it becomes natural, and you'll be able to in 3D recall most environments, and imagine unfamiliar ones easier.)

When listening to music, try to follow one instrument only. Then two, then three. Then try to follow all of them independently. This is a test of awareness and focus. Eventually this will give you the ability to hold two thoughts at once, or do two seperate activities at once. This technique also increases your ability to multitask like a ninja.

Meditate for a few minutes every morning. This "wipes the slate clean" allowing you to more easily "reread" the events and data of the day.

Avoid excess sugar. It will give you a great boost at first, but afterwards you will be drained and sluggish, and therefore less aware of your surroundings.

There are many other "brain training" on the market/internet, but these ones are the easiest to naturally apply in your own life.

Thanks for all the info! I'll have to cut this tree down and do some new planting over time. Hopefully I can get a new sense of direction out of it.

Again, thanks to everybody who put the time into the help. I appreciate it!
