Canuck User ID: 716879 Canada 07/02/2009 09:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've got this beautiful zucchini plant growing and exploding with flowers but I noticed some are falling off and no veggie is growing. Quoting: hardboiledhereticDo I need more than one for the pollination factor? It's not my favorite veggie but my mom gave me one to grow for her, and she has one too and the same thing is happening. Thanks! h I have one too and the same thing happened, I thought it was my squirel friends..... Apparently there are supposed to be three plants in a grouping when you plant them... if that helps???? “I shall not commit the fashionable stupidity of regarding everything I cannot explain as fraud.” CARL JUNG IN 1919 "The power of accurate observation is often called cynicism by those who don't have it." - George Bernard Shaw Cree proverb: Only after the last tree has been cut down, only after the last river has been poisoned, only after the last fish has been caught, only then will you find, that money cannot be eaten. Hi Canuck, did you ever get a veggie eventually? It's funny you mention three plants because that's how they were sold, in a pack of three and my mom split them up between her, my sister in law and me because she can only grow one in a pot. Thanks, that's interesting. I took zucchini for granted because I thought it was kind of a no fail type of vegetable. And AC, I thought about brushing the pollen around. I don't suppose it could hurt. h |

Thanks! h The plant has male and female flowers so bees can pollinate the same plant. The flowers falling off is ok. All squash need about an inch of water per week. It should fruit in the next week or so. |

The same can be done with just about every plant. But the alley is crooked, dark, and very narrow. They can't surround me. Sometimes you can beat the odds with a careful choice of where to fight. [link to batshitman.mybrute.com] |

hardboiledheretic (OP) User ID: 716940 United States 07/02/2009 10:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Same problem with me this year. Tons of blooms but no signs of veggies. I started by seed and planted quite few. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 716964Hmmm..I'm in NE Ohio, where are you? Probably close by I think. When I started gardening as a young person, everything grew great and too much. Now 20 years later, it's hit and miss, despite my best efforts. Because I've moved so much (but still in the same area), I blame it on soil conditions, or lack of sunlight, but I have to wonder if it isn't the damn GM plants we buy at the garden center that are already fucked up. I don't know, just throwing this out there. But AC you started yours from seeds. Maybe the sun is in the wrong place. lol j/k |

The problem could be the lack of sun for my plants. I tired to use every square inch of soil I had availble this year and these plants are next to a wild rose bush. My cucumbers on the other hand are doing fabulous. |

hardboiledheretic (OP) User ID: 716940 United States 07/02/2009 10:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Too much nitrogen will cause the plant to grow and grow and not put anything on. Quoting: Flaming Sword 715153. too true too true potash for flowering and fruit epsom salts fer drive Perhaps too much fertilizer, I don't know, I don't measure. It was a 5-3-3 granular I used at initial planting then nothing further except some diluted fishmeal stuff. I used a light sprinkling of epsom salts in my other patch of garden and they seemed to like it. Gardening never used to be this complicated, or is it just me? I know, it's me. :) |

Splendiferous User ID: 716946 United States 07/02/2009 11:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Zucchinis broke my heart this year! I can grow lots of things but this foolproof veggie defeated me. I think I overwatered. My three plants turned yellow and died. I sprayed them with a neem oil solution that should have prevented most diseases and pests, but they still slowly turned yellow and keeled anyway. I did get a couple of zuks off each plant first...what do ya'll gardeners think? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 716985Did ya feed them at initial planting and then again just as they started to set blossoms? If not, then they didn't have enough nutrients in the soil. |

Quoting: canttakeitnomo 716945Yes, I'm amazed everyone doesn't know this. I had 1 zuchimi plant last year (got sseds from someome), saved seeds from some of the fruit, planted them this year but none of them sprouted. Mine grew crazy though last year. I fed it some compost after it sprouted and that was it. Now you all need some recipes or new ways to use those zucs: Put them in your smoothies, use them in all your recipes, chopped small or sliced big. They're good in chili, stuffing, mixed with other veggies, in spaghetti, muffins, cakes, I think I would try them in everything I make. |
