I was thinking cannibals in the past thought the eating of the enemy flesh would make them stronger (perhaps living more) and that's exactly what it happened in Rapa Nui. Did that particular bacteria appear there because of that rotten flesh decayed and became part of the soil? In the past they inhabitants had to eat themselves because they wiped out all vegetation.
